Not everyone is serious about chess, which I think it's fine. It's not like it's your job or your family you aren't serious about; it's a hobby for the vast, vast majority.
Others work hard and make slower progress than others. No need to make anyone feel bad, imo.
I was surprised to find how elitist chess is...I can't imagine this mindset would be viewed as positive if applied to another area.
I'm better than most at math. Obviously there are many better than me, but regardless, calc BC was very easy for me. I spent a lot of time on math outside of school, and learned stuff I was interested in. Anyway, I don't know how it would ever be seen as acceptable if I taught people calculus while sneering at them for not being serious enough about math and not having a good understanding of the fundamentals (in my experience, a lot of people come into calculus without a good pre-calculus foundation.) So I don't know how that logic applies to chess and is acceptable.

In my experience, you are correct. Games I play that are reasonably long end up with 2000 estimation for both in most cases, or one is 50 points over, second under, or something like that. Plus I had a ridiculous unrated game where sub 1 000 opponent blundered 3 times in 15 move game, and was estimated around 1 200.
