Why do so many players resign so early?

Literally about half of the time I play online my opponent resigns when the game is still pretty even. It makes no sense to me. Why do so many people start a game of chess and then just quit in the middle when they still have about a 50% chance to win? It's so annoying. It kind of makes it hardly even worth playing online.

Damn it, that never even occurred to me. Very clever.

That would make sense if they were losing, but what's so weird about it is that the game is usually pretty much an even tie. In fact, on a couple occasions, they were actually winning when they resigned!

They need to leave and don’t want to annoy you

But it is very annoying. Unless we're playing speed chess (which it wasn't) they shouldn't be starting a chess game if they only have a short amount of time before they need to leave. I know things sometimes unexpectedly come up that are more important than finishing a game of chess, but it's happened way too often for that to be the explanation. Like I said, it's literally about half the time.

My best guess is that there are simply a lot of people who want an easy match where they don't have to think too much, and once they see that it's not easy they just decide to quit. But who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I usually just resign once I'm a piece down. I've tried playing through those games and rarely ever swindle a game from a lost position anymore so there's no point in fighting on after that in my opinion. But resigning when there's no clear advantage or win for either side is definitely not my M.O.
