I started not playing humans till I was good. Of course, good wasn't anything I'd be proud of today, but I could thrash my Chess Computer on Level 5. I occassionally played my Dad as well, but no one else until I'd been playing for about a year and a half. I never wanted to be a pathetic beginner playing people when I can barely move the peices- stupid pride, I guess, because I learnt a lot at my first chess club. So I really relate to Sqod.
The reason I love chess is because it's infinite. Say what you like about 32-peice databases and engines, it's depth is mind-blowing. It's a journey that I'll never finish, but it's full of satifaction like I've solved it every time I win properly. It's so intense and challegning, and I just love the mental stimulation. Plus it really is fun; blitz and chess clubs and crazy puzzles, but also when you've been playing for an hour and you manage to win and you've just left there grinning.
I agree-your will almost never have perfection in a game, play for fun.
