Why do you play chess?

i was just sitting here working on chess, playing chess, thinking chess, talking about chess with jay and then suddenly i asked myself: what is with me and chess???

chess does something to my brain. i love how it is perfectly neat and tidy. just 64 squares with pieces seated perfectly and executing their perfect rules in what can become perfect combinations. so beautiful. brings a tear to my eye...

not sure. perhaps its the enigma that is chess. amazing that such a simple looking game is so so so deep. i am new to chess but it has grabbed me and won't let go. It beats me up and I enjoy it! :)

I also like how it's like a battlefield. You are controling your army in a beautiful, yet deadly ballet of war.

I always found chess as a challenge and it is something that I can work at and constantly improve and continue to challenge myself. I enjoy the journey chess has taken me on and I look forward to where it will take me in the future.

I love chess because it is an intellectual challenge and it seems the possibilities are endless, its like a whole new world.

without the tears and jay, I basically can say the same as Erik.

Erik's answer is mine, too. I especially like that every game you ever play is completely different. Unlike video games, which I really can't get into much any more at the ripe, perhaps rotten, age of 35, chess is infinitely unique and fresh: much like bakery doughnuts at 6am. Only, these doughnuts drive you crazy.

wow way to tie chess with food

it gives something i can control and i find that soothing plus it requires focus which takes my mind of all the s**t in my life and all the mistakes i made

For the points.SealedTongue out just kidding.....

Simple......CHESS IS LIFE!!!!!

NinjaBear
It removes me from my worries temporarily.

What fascinates me is, the rules are simple, but the possibilities are limitless. Even K+R vs K+R+P is not so simple and even among top GMs very few have completely mastered the ending (although, of course, many are competent)! Computer strategy games like Warcraft have dozens of commands, special rules, and maps to learn and but once you know them the core game seems somewhat empty in comparison.

So many things, I've always enjoyed pastimes that require concentration and require practice/study/instruction before improvement can be realized.  I love the fact that although I'll never be a great player I can definitely become a better player.  Chess scratches an itch in my brain...the desire to learn.

because in my life I get good at things quickly, and they no longer challenge me,

but I don't see myself getting that good at chess...

It's a good way to challenge your brain, keep it young, and show off...

These quotes put it best why I play chess:

"You can not worry over your worries while playing chess" - MacCarthy

"Chess, like love, like music has the power to make men/women happy" - Tarrasch

In a few years, according to the Christian paradigm anyway, I'm gunna be standing before the Great White Throne; and when a voice with the timbre of rolling thunder demands, "What have you done with your life?" I want to be able to say, "I played chess!"

It is nice to connect with people over a common interest which totally bypasses the usual interests which bring like-minded people together while separating them from other groups. On this site people who might, in other circumstances, literally be at each other's throats can enjoy encountering one another over the electronic chessboard, where the only significant matter is what happens between the pieces on those 64 squares.

I'm actually a really bad player. I mean bad. Like, I just played the beta live chess. and lost about 400 points. But I keep playing. I play every chance I get and win, lose or draw I rarely have had enough. Why is probably mostly akin to what Likesforests said about the simple mechanics generating very complex outcomes. I've played alot of hardcore RPG video games and once you figure out the mechanics, it's very simple to play and understand. But the more I look into chess strategy the deeper and deeper it goes. ... kinda like jazz music.

Chess is like a box of choclates, once you start a game you never know what your gonna get!!!

Plus its not intresting than draughts, but I still reserve my ultimate energy for the ultimate pleasure.....................yes thats right, but as there may be young kiddies reading this I will leave the rest to your mature jugement.

Man v Man. No weapons, its the ultimate game, LOVE CHESS.
