Why does chess attract so many beta males?

When I confront a human being as my Thou and speak the basic word I-Thou to him, then he is no thing among things nor does he consist of things. He is no longer He or She, a dot in the world grid of space and time, nor a condition to be experienced and described, a loose bundle of named qualities. Neighborless and seamless, he is Thou and fills the firmament. Not as if there were nothing but he; but everything else lives in his light.

Beautiful precision in a diagnose. But I think the broadly defined force of 'mental space' could be slightly underestimated from the raw perspective of an 'outgoing' momentum. Thus the entire alphabet of graduation should be given respect in own their try of navigating its uncharted waters ..in many millions of forever private oceans.

It's a safe, convenient way for them to pretend that they're out in the world, actually getting something done with their lives. It's just delusional, actually. Alpha males with true intellect would never spend their limited time on earth on something that equates to nothing. Naturally.

...and you would be two levels removed from alphas, since you bottom feed on these theoretical beta males and do less than nothing by spending your time commenting on a game that you claim to be worthless and those who play it (apparently too dense to see the irony of wasting your time commenting on how others waste their time).

You are the first openly gamma male on chess.com.  Congrats.  If your premise is wrong, you're an a$$hat...if your theory is right, you are an even bigger a$$hat.  It's a special person that can paint themselves into a corner this badly.

This is true of any 'leisure activity', that is to say all sports and games. How many truly good tennis players are there in the world who can make a proper living from the game, and put money away for a rainy day? There are probably more chess professionals making a decent living out of chess than there are tennis players making a living out of tennis. Those who actually make it, as a proportion of those who try, is very low in any sport. It's just so happens that athletes in American football, soccer, ice hockey, tennis, golf etc are much more visible than chess players. I honestly fail to see how this makes them more or less alpha or beta male. Arguably, you are mad for trying to make money from a hobby instead of finding yourself a real, steady job.

You mean you'll be off doing something that equates and amounts to nothing wink.png.  Feel free to regale us with your life's accomplishments when you come back, and we'll see what they seem to amount to.

It seems more like your comment is emanating (I totally used that word wrong) denial. After all, no matter what you do, the end result is the same. The only difference is how you get there.

How about if I spend the rest of the day working in a lab, attempting to find a legitimate cure for cancer?

What if you'r input in the breakthrough for the cure for cancer deprive the people actually sick of completing their karmic cycle .. thus throwing them in a repetition spiral, where they'll have to struggle for another few entire lifetimes with sickness scenario?

All because of another outside 'action' from a position of limited understanding. (no offense)

How about if I spend the rest of the day working in a lab, attempting to find a legitimate cure for cancer? Does that equate to nothing? What if I'm in law enforcement and later tonight, I save two children who were home alone when a burglar broke into their house? What if I invest time into helping a friend who is contemplating suicide after a horrible break up? How about the military? What if I spend this evening fighting terrorist organizations and making sure that genocide and human rights atrocities are not committed somewhere?

On, and on, and on. Or...I could work on my chess endgames. If you don't see the point, I don't know what else to say. As said previously though: Enjoy the rest of your time today. I do have to go now. Unlike some of you, I can't sit glued to my computer inside my home 24/7.

....And yet you are not doing any of those things. If you were, you'd stop trying to convince people that chess is pointless. You would have more important things to attend to.

What on earth are you talking about? I don't, nor ever did, try to make money from Chess LOL. Look at my ratings, Dude. Jfc. I'm the guy who actually leaves the house and does make a living. The beta males are the ones who sit at home working on their chess game. Of course.

Lmao, why do you imagine every chess.com user to be some lonely person behind their computer screen whose only endeavor in life is a children's board game? I am sure (or at least hoping) these users have jobs, hobbies, and friends. But you are too stubborn to see that and somehow believe your life is so much superior when its as meaningless as ours.

Translation: I suck at it.

Believing in Alpha males is generally an excuse to be a jerk.

You don't do any of those things.  But to answer your questions...

- If you actually part of a team that found a cure for cancer then you would be part of the 1% I already mentioned.

- If you are part of law enforcement, your effect on humanity is ultimately transient and negligible.  Sad, but true.

- If you talk someone out of suicide, thousands more will commit suicide that very day, and the person you talked out of it today might go through with it next week.  Also transient and negligible.  Better spent effort...making the world a place where large swathes of people don't feel despondent on the regular.

- How *about* the military?  Have you *been* in the military?  Branch?  What was your MOS/AFSC/NEC?

- If you are fighting terrorism, which terrorists would those be?  Terrorists named for specific crimes, or just any combatants or other designees of the war on terror, or just anyone that fits your personal definition of a terrorist?  Are you 100% positive that you are preventing atrocities and genocide vs. enabling or committing them?  Also transient and negligible, unless you are Jason Bourne or on a Navy Seals strike team or something wink.png, in which case see above re: 1%.

- I can't speak for others, but I check the forums usually twice a day, morning and evening.  Sometimes during lunch, oftentimes not.  Your 24x7 straw man is just the way your brain tries to smooth over the fact that you are losing all your arguments wink.png.  Less trauma if you go to your treadmill job believing you are okay and that everyone else lives in a basement.
