I don't know much about him but he was going to Webster University and Texas Tech prior to that (affiliated with Susan Polgar's SPICE program), both in the US.

German here.
I was listening to the German feed of the Naka-Harikrishna match (great that this is a thing). I was surprised to notice that Georg Meiers German is not that of a native-speaker. He makes (few but noticible) mistakes, the kind an english native speaker would make. Also his accent is a bit off, oddly it sounds a bit like a mix of French and English. Has he been living abroad for a long time?
a few exemples:
- "Warum jetzt nicht Springer D4 auch?", "Dame zentralisieren" are not a things a German would say. Also, "Ich erinnerte mich, dass ich einmal auf Zeit gewonnen habe" instead of "Ich erinnere mich.."
On an other note David Pruess speaks very good German.
