It is one of the oldest openings, having been played by Rodrigo Lopez, Giulio Cesare Polerio, and others prior to the seventeenth century. The majority of Gioachino Greco's openings, recorded 1619-1625, are King's Gambits.

Ah! So the fad made a massive amount of variations. And since they weren't "theorized" not all were good, is this it...

I would say that if you put all of Greco's King's Gambits together, you would find that they are theorized.

This will be awkward to follow due to site limitations, but it is a merge of all the games in Francis Beale's collection of Greco's games. Beale's book was published in 1656 and based on manuscripts no longer available. Hence, it contains many games not otherwise accessible. I have annotated some of the games with later play, and those also appear in the merge.

If I added all the games from still extant manuscripts, the number of variations would more than double.
