It was a bad habit, better that it stopped. If you lose, of course you didn’t enjoy and you played bad, nothing is good here. If you win, it means your opponent had mistakes and if you say good game, it’s like you are mocking him. If ends in draw, either it was a boring game which of course you cannot call it a good game or it was a game with a lot of up and down, that means it was fist of blunders. Not good for anyone 😀 chess is only good for the winner, that’s all.

I guess but you could say good game if both of you played your best and had a great time although yeah

It's very few players that say 'good game' after a game.

Because they're waiting for Godot?

Sorry but where?

I'm new to this but I agree with congratulating the winner and saying good game. Even if I don't win might as well learn something from it so good from both points of view.

Idk people are just rude

BattleChessGN18

Do you mean on chess.com or in general modern-day chess culture?

For all I know, I've played many well-mannered chess players in real life who do shake hands and/or say 'good game'.

MaddyCole

You don't bring me chess news
You don't play the nimzo
You hardly blitz with me anymore or sit at the board
Till the end of the game

I remember when You couldn't wait to play me Used to hate to queen me

Now after mating me late at night
When it's good for you babe
And you're playing white
Well, you just roll rooks
And turn out the light

You don't say good game anymore

We used to play so natural
To talk about the endgame
But 'almost wons' don't count on your score
They just eat at your core
'Till you find a new way

And baby, I remember
All the tactics you taught me
I learned how to draw
And I learned how to sandbag
Well I learned how to sack
Even learned how to flag

You'd think I could learn
How to tell you good game
'Cause you don't say good game
Anymore

Well, you'd think I could learn
How to tell you good game
'Cause you don't say good game anymore

Possibly because you play very few good games? Jokes, jokes, jokes 😁

That could well be the reason!

Just online I'm talking about (and I won't expect it from bullet and blitz games)

I agree, I think good etiquette and manners is crucial not only for Chess, but for the world. I will say good game from now on.

Godott

. . . . sorry to keep you waiting.

As for the meaningless point, I suppose that comes down the question of whether you think manners/politeness in general society is meaningless. Is it also meaningless to say 'good game' when playing over the board?, although nearly all players say it when playing over the board. I'm just not sure why the same custom shouldn't be maintained online.

Well, if they've lost then they very well may be too annoyed with themselves or the opponent to do so. If they've won, they may be excited/inspired and already want to start a new game. At least that has been the way with me (bonus points for honesty? No? Ok.)

BAS_Meps

I play in focus mode and with chat off. Toxic players or kids sh*t talking whilst im trying to play made me too fed up to even bother having chat box open.

Shame, several times when i have a good game i would like to thank the opponent

just a waist of time

Because people on here started making threads complaining about it. Not sure why anyone would complain about it.

This is why we can't have nice things. Sheesh.
