Why does society hate chess?

"Hate" is a word that gets used too frivolously.
I've never met a single person who "hates" chess. Bobby Fischer came the closest but I never met him.
I used to visit a local chess club regularly and percentage-wise never encountered more obnoxious people. Not all that many but the ones who were, were really bad. The same types I seem to run into more often in the dungeons of blitz world on this website, the little bit of time I've spent there.

because there aren't a lot of sexy chess masters. the governing board of chess officials needs to hire a bunch of models & tout them as chess players. do a total campaign. also get the LGBT community involved. have gay people playing chess on movies & TV programs

Some of society loves the LGBT community.
Caitlyn Jenner got a humungous amount of positive attention for declaring himself a woman with only vague mutterings from the right, and those were overwhelmingly denounced.

I don't think most people hate chess, nor regard it as a loser game.
Nerdy, maybe, but I don't think that word has negative connotations anymore. I think most people think of it as a smart-peoples game that they are not qualified to play.

Agreed, hate seems like a wierd word, espacially now.
I grew up in the 80 and being rather awkward fit the "nerdy" description like a glove. (was that a nerdy way to put it!?). being into chess was like definitely out of the question. I wished I had embraced my inner-nerdiness.lol.
todays videogame kids don't care nearly as much. Chess players might be an isolated bunch; but their not heckled nearly as much.
and nerdiness; begrudgingly -- isn't as uncool.
that, by the way, is as much as I know (and can get) out of my kids. as a 40 year guy... I really don't care so much whats hot and whats not with the teenagers these days.

hiring gay models sounds wierd kiss me. I think your trying to troll.

Most of us truly do not give a crap about the LGBT or WXYZ "community" (where is this "community" BTW; never seen it); live and let live but do not expect me to give a sh***t, like I do not expect anyone to give a sh**t about my lifestyle choices.
TV pushes these issues to get ratings.
Jenner wants attention and money and I despise him/her or whatever. She/he is not courageous, nor a hero; he/she is getting rich and famous (again).

I don't think people hate chess. They seem to have respect for people who are able to play well. A statement much more likely to be true is that not a lot of people play chess seriously, if we define serious as knowing what a rating is and trying to raise it :) And that's understandable of course, it's a huge commitment.
I mean maybe in middle school or something people have something against it. But there are also silly names like "four-eyes" as well, they're just things people say and eventually grow out of.

More people would be chess players if it was not for the chess players, they are often a strange and socially awkward bunch.
Visit any local Chess Tourney and this fact will be instantly confirmed. Great taste in clothes. Lots of nervous ticks. Whatever.
I think people in chess tournaments are just fine. There are some overly competitive pricks, but generally the people there are pretty interesting and sportive.

But it's still an wonderful addiction for life. Run with it. But remember to shower beforehand.
Actually most people at a club or tournament behave fairly normally IMO. Maybe introverted, but clubs and tournaments are quiet places filled with people who share a common interest. I can walk up to and have a normal conversation with just about anyone at a club or tournament.
... now the grooming, wardrobe, and ticks, well, that's sometimes true lol :)
Agreed :)

While this point is probably, partially, true, I don't think that makes it easy to do something like this, to live the rest of your life as someone with a different gender.
Honestly, I have trouble, sometimes, distinguishing a so called transgender from someone who simply likes things that their gender isn't supposed to like. If you like dresses why should that mean you're a girl? You could just be a boy who happens to like dresses. I actually think supporting the idea that you can change your sex/gender inadvertently reinforces gender roles -- e.g., oh you like this, boys aren't allowed to like this, but if you're a girl we'll let you like it. It's a shallow way of viewing people.
But with that said, I still feel for people in that situation because obviously it sucks when everyone tells you boys/girls are a certain way and you just seem to fail to fit that in every way. Whether you can actually change your gender or not, to be willing to go through that process takes courage and it is something they struggle through.

Because chess takes too much effort to understand vs popular sport. I can drunk beer, yell at the TV, and cheer for any random team when I watch football, knowing nothing else about the game.
Kinda hard to watch chess if you dont even know how the pieces move. I can totally watch football when I dont even know the rules, know any of the players, and so can/does everyone else.

They were showing chess replays and highlights on ESPN the other day.

yeah latvia is a uptopia
I think chess is big in Elbonia; at least Dilbert says so

Everyone's sexuality/gender role/identity is a confused mix; some people (e.g. macho males) play up one thing because they are insecure about it.
If Jenner is confused, whatever, he's not different from millions of others. Most who want to change genders don't have money or fame to get them through it. he is no hero to me at all. It should be a private matter but he made it public to take advantage of it for fame and fortune. Everybody says it's no one's business, but then they applaud him for making it everyone's business
Chess players are often "socially awkaward" and introverted as commented above, but I would rather spend the evening amongst this lot than a load of pretty (vacant) clubbers.
Once you break through the barrier, most chess players have their story and often have interesting things to say....
