When i was much younger i used to worry about what people thought about whatever i was into at the time. At a certain age i realized that it really doesn't matter. When you are open about what you are into you will attract friends who are into the same thing. These are often the very people you can have the best time with. So why should anyone care what a nonchessplaying person thinks about chess?
Why does society hate chess?
Every generation says the same thing about the following one. Wouldn't worry.
Maybe each generation is right and we've been getting progressively lazier and stupider?
It is art and beautiful.
Yet society sees it as a nerdy loser pastime.
If the game doesn't come with beer commercials, then how can we know if it isn't for losers? In fact, maybe chess IS for losers because we don't have beer commercials.
Can I get a fact check, please?
when I was in school playing the chess, a tough guy student came in and started yelling how boring and stupid chess was. lets put it this way, he will never be caught out paying 10 million dollars for a painting some clown did with the beauty of nature all around us.
Looking at history, most chess savvy gentlemen used to smoke cigars. A nice glass of cognac/brandy was also part of the chess culture.
Nowadays the coolest chess players enjoy a nice beer instead.
there's no such thing as "society." these days everyone does their own thing online, or watches tv, plays sports, whatever. most people don't think much about chess at all one way or another; most people who don't play think of those who do as intellectuals/intelligent, which is true in many cases. chess is just one of many niches in a fragmented world. there aren't really communities any more, or anything you could call society. what used to be society is very fragmented
Why does society hate chess?
I don't know to a certainty that society hates chess, like many questions, the answer sometimes lies in the nature of the question.
Donald Trump would ask, does this comb over make me look bald? His wife however, would not ask such a question.. it's irrelevant to her.
So my answer is this.. Don't bother me - It's my move and I'm thinking
for most people I know chess is not even on their radar; they never think about it; I wouldn't say they think of it as a nerdy loser pasttime; more like something really smart people do that they would not be good at. It's more thinking than most people want to do. they would rather watch tv or facebook or play mindless games on their ipods. people want to be distracted and entertained. but they have kind of an admiration for those who are actually willing to use their brains
I dont think society hates chess but i think as far as younger generations are concerned chess has had its day it seems to be board games v smart phones.
In terms of younger generation, I think that statement is not accurate. In every tournaments that I join, there are so many kids and teens who are in the tournament.
