That was Hannibal ... or however you spell his name.

it was not hannibal! alexander the Great came from Carthage in North Africa. Crossed the Mediteranean into Spain and raised an army to fight Rome. This is why soceity hates chess , it is because chess players have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

Society does not, in general, hate chess.  In my experience, most random people on the street (in my parts of the U.S.) just seem indifferent, especially the adults.  People have many forms of entertainment, mental excercise, and hobbies to choose from.  To each his/her own.  No need to be dramatic or take it personally.

As for the small percentage that actively express negative attitudes towards chess, they probably think of it as a waste of time since they have no appreciation for its aethetcic appeal, nor its utility as mental excercise.  That's perfectly fine, and to be expected.  This would be a less interesting world if we all had the same interests and attitudes.  I'm totally indifferent to baseball, but that does not mean I "hate" it or the people who like it.

I have noticed that a majority of young children naturally seem very interested ("look, he's playing chest!" Smile) whenever I leave a board out at the park or cafe, while I'm "fishing" for opponents (slim pickings in Tampa).  I guess for many of these kids, this natural enthusiasm get redirected to other pursuits over the years.
