Why does this site function so badly?

I was playing a game that was interrupted after just five moves as the connection was lost. The problem was with Chess.com as I had no Internet problem with any other site. Even though I had more than 9 minutes time when the interruption occured, and it lasted no more than 2 minutes, I discovered that I had lost the game when the connection came back.

So the question is very simple: why should I lose a game when the problem is fully caused by Chess.com not being able to keep its site functionning?

So in other words, they intentionally cause players to lose games to force to them to pay? Undecided If the message is "Either you pay or we'll make sure you lose games by causing interruptions", it sounds very much like blackmailing.

Well, I started playing today and had a winning streak of around ten games in a row. I wouldn't mind having it broken because someone beat me, but to have it broken because Chess.com disfavors players who haven't paid is harder to accept.

Unfortunately, that doesn't make me likely to pay in the future, but much more likely to leave the site and discourage friends from using it. This is not how a site should work.

It's all about your connection. Just because you can load other webpages doesn't mean it can handle the continuous real-time data transfer for live chess. I never had trouble when I was on dial-up, now I am on a much faster wifi connection but I get more problems with live because the connection isn't always continuous.

Of course if you're just here to whine it seems like you've got things under control.

Shut down active applications on your computer, and run a test at:

www.pingtest.net

Check for lost packets and high latency / jitter.

I was a nonpaying member for 6 months before I got my diamond membership and I think playing live chess is pretty much the same, apart from no ads and less lag

It's not the bandwidth, it's the blips, the brief interruptions, that cause problems. Nor does it have much of anything to do with your processor speed unless you are running a Commodore 64.

Are you running a Commodore 64? Do you even know what that is?

i have a woeful connection to the live chess.com server, but an excellent connection to the site i play blitz on.

I can confirm that on my lower-spec netbook, Live Chess runs pretty slowly and often becomes nonresponsive, particularly when I am on the tab that shows a graph with dots for available games.  Processor does make a difference.

There are a lot of things about this site that are awful.  At the top of the list are the time lags which seem to happen mostly to non-payers, 'premove' option (which is illegal since computer chess rules are supposed to mirror otb rules... in other words, why is my opponent 'touching' pieces when it isn't his turn?), and unrealistic rating system.  Ultimately, the problem is that there aren't enough chess clubs.  OTB chess is real chess, live, and much better for many reasons.  Online 'chess' is a sad second alternative just to save some gas....  we need to get back to real chess, with real rules that are enforced  consistently, with players whose primary goal is not to win games at any cost so they can get a few worthless rating points.

No, I'm using a UNIVAC, smartass.

Don't get snappy just cause you're not an expert.

From a network perspective, there are really only a couple things that will bog down your live games:

1. Java problems

2. Latency issues

My 128 spectrum works well..But it takes a while to logon as the magnetic tape keeps rapping round the capstan.By the time i get to make a move they've changed the rules.

Works 100x better than FICS, often my opponents go into -10 minutes on FICS (obviously game is over on their end, but i need to wait).

ICC has pretty solid connection from what I can tell, but I would say its about the same as chess com.

That's why I stick with punch cards.

Thank you for information net advice.  But what man mean when he write "Latency issues" ?  Is this like being Latent homosexual?

No, it has to do with latent heat of vaporization. Ultimately all internet traffic has to transfer through smoke signals.

I used the site since several years. But the connection is really bad now. I don't think it is a problem on my side.I have reaklly high speed internet and a fast computer. Probably, the servers of chess.com are no longer able to cope with the larger number of players. So their response times are ridiculously delayed making life chess no longer a fun experience. They need to invest some new stuff!!!

I have the same problem as Cicero2000. I am playing on this site for over a year and it always worked pefectly fine, but for some days now Live Chess is absolutely unbearable.

Either i get disconnected 3-5 times in a 5 minute game or it won't even start.

It is definitely not a problem on my side as every other webpage and real time application works without any problem.
