Why doesn't chess.com stop cheating more aggressively?

It seems when I come on to watch any games I can usually find at least one player that is questionable whether they're cheating or not. Apart from this I've also had the pleasure of playing people who then have their accounts closed quite a few times. Why does chess.com try to remedy it only after the fact? This just makes people wonder if they're playing a computer or not and takes a lot away from the fun. Apart form this I've been accused of being a program, which I don't really care about, but created an unpleasant atmosphere. To be honest I think this is a great site, and this is the only problem I have.  I just don't like knowing that the person I'm playing now, may be cheating and not caught for a few days.

I've been accused before as well, and it doesn't bother me. I just suggest to the person that they should report me.

Does it bug you though when you play a player who takes exactly 4 seconds to move, then grinds you down somehow and get their account closed later?

Thanks, didnt expect to have to join a group....seems wierd

Do you mean 4 total seconds? In 1 0, I'm ok at determining whether my opponent is a bot. So I just don't play them again. In the grand scheme of things, no, it doesn't bother me. Or more accurately, it probably bothers me until the next 1 0 game starts. You know how it is: you have to have a short memory in bullet.

i completely agree. chess.com needs some pre-emptive account closing of cheaters. why wait until after they cheat? just doesn't make sense. take a lesson from the iraq war and get on it.

In one min its easier, in blitz games though its a bit harder. Those are the ones I have a problem with, Its hard to sit through 10 mins when you've figured out its a bot after two...then get another one not too much later. I just makes it less fun cause you're always wondering if someone with a blitz rating over 2000 is a bot or not.

Sir, that's not what I meant at all. Cudos on your attempt at being ridiculous though, constructive! What I'm saying is that most other chess sites have real time moderation of cheating in live games. I think that should be adopted rather than having to rely on people sending in tickets, evaluating them etc etc.

I almost exclusively play 1 0 in live chess. If I want to play correspondence chess (5 0 for example), I'll just start a turn-based game.

It comes in handy against cheaters and time-wasters, but that's just a side effect. If my opponent decides to wait a full minute, then yeah that's ok. I'll wait and then just not play them again. If it were 10 minutes, then yeah that's a different story.

So I don't have as much invested in the game, which makes it easier to let it go.

Thats actually a good idea, I just wanted a site though where I could play some 5-0 and analyze them afterwards. Have some good games and enjoy it, I completely agree though that in bullet it doesnt matter, heck you can lose 10 in a row to anyone and its no biggie, youll have made up the points in an hour.

You're pretty highly rated, I think you might do what I do. Add people to your friends list after you play them, and then when you get back on another time, look for friends first and foremost.

I couldn't agree more. I've submitted to Chess.com folks obvious cheaters, and they did nothing about it. Oh well, what can you do but continue to play or go somewhere else like the ICC which does kick out cheaters.

Id rather try voicing my opinion before going elsewhere. I like the site and there are some nice people here, plus lets be honest, its free! I just dont enjoy the same as much as I do on other sites.

From the entry at the support page regarding cheating:

http://support.chess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/124/0/cheaters--cheating-what-you-need-to-know

What does Chess.com think about cheating?

  • Cheating is a terrible disease all over the world of online chess.
  • Our policies are clear & strict; they are also faithfully enforced.
  • We feel we are extremely effective in identifying and dealing with most cheaters.

What does Chess.com recommend that we do/think about cheating?

  • Forget about it!
  • If you are rated below 2200, you are NOT going to encounter a lot of cheaters
  • If you are rated above 2200, rest assured that we are always checking top players and evolving our detection methods
  • Enjoy your chess, tell us if you have concerns about a given member, and let US worry about the cheaters!

Note also that, to keep our regular forums free of a subject that tends to cause unnecessary anxiety, we have created a special forum thread for discussions of cheating in online chess.  Please restrict your comments on the subject (if any!) to that forum.  Thank you!
