I think it is fine to say "good luck" at the start of a game, and perhaps a few words at the end of a fun game. But we are here to play chess, and chatting is a distraction.

I like the good sportsmanship. I typically wish players good luck at the beginning of unrated games, but in rated chess, the well wishes just cost me seconds of my clock and that puts me at a disadvantage as those same seconds might be used to flag me.
In rated, I'd just play and don't chat. In unrated, chatting is more acceptable and a "good luck" at the beginning is usually well received ![]()

I recently noticed that there's a "focus mode" for playing chess that hides chat, the players' ratings, and the moves (though there are arrows so you move through them). I turned it on because I think hiding the ratings can help the psyche. So, some people might be using that mode.
