why e4 is better than d4.

e4 leads to open positions almost always.Open positions tend to be easier to play than closed positions which happen a lot of the times in d4 openings.

ForeverHoldYourPiece

d4 is closed and positional usually, if you enjoy positonal chess, and are good at it, it's the correct choice.

e4 is open and closed depending on how it goes, if you are good at tactics and attack, it's the prime choice.

Neither is superior to the other though.

I prether e4.Postional in a way is hard to play.

Spiritbro77

Hard? The hard is what makes chess worth playing.

wrong.  e4 is better.

I like nothing more than a good, old-fashioned, wide-open slugfest like you find in a mainline Chigorin Ruy, and hate that sort of slow, boring grind you always get in a Botvinnik Semi-Slav.

I like how you make such a bold statement with no points proving such a claim.

What did you expect in a thread like this?

Kasparov and Aronian, to mention just two players renowned for their tactical skills and sharp play, have started with d4 more than with e4.

qrayons

Both are inferior to 1.f3 followed by a quick 2.g4, which gives white a lot of kingside space and excellent attacking chances.

d4 is better but I prefer e4.

revengeofthepawns

I agree.  d4 doesn't do much for me far as getting a quick start with white.  Whenever white does it I know I'm in for a defense game, which I don't mind.

Agree.

Tactical_Battle

Hmm agree with melvarnboy......whatever u play b it e4 d4 or c4 doesn't matter lot every position has tactical n positional nuances just u need 2 spot those error n punish ur opponent

Chessman265

Well, e4 meets the sicillian, which almost equalizes in most lines. d4 doesn't have an extremely effective line to equalize, perhaps the most effective is the Nimzo-Indian.

montemaur

I eventually want to play both e and d4, and I find with automatic queen support on the d file that it's easier to get d4 out later on, so e4 as the first move is the most comfortable time to play it, because it's undefended.  I always theorized that's why so many lines developed from e4 originally, but who knows.

the pettrof is fun after e4 e5 nf3 nf6
