Look, kid. When you become stronger, you'll realize that d4 is better. Then, when you become even stronger, you'll realise that e4 is better. Then, when you're world champion, you'll realise that a3 is the best.
why e4 is better than d4.

It works the other way too.

As usual, chessredpanda had no idea what I was talking about
And as usual, Harryz is trying unsuccessfully to be funny. :)
Greetings:
I recently did a study on e4 vs. d4. First, when I was playing 1500 elo chess I found d4 much harder to defend against, let alone create counterplay. Yes I scored sum fine victories against d4 but more crushing defeats. So recently I had a brain storm and decided to check the most unbiased source of players and games I could think of, engines! No fatigue, no excuses, no preferred psychological choices. The result is clear. Engines mostly draw and lose facing d4 and have their best chances against e4. Last week ChessBase had an two part article by some economics phd candidate on this very topic. He crunched numbers and adjusted for variables and like every economist lined up end to end there still was no real reaching of a conclusion other than 'pretty much the same'. Admittingly I didn't read the whole of the two articles and maybe he discussed this but most of his report was human based samples. Just something to add to the thread. Analysis, Calculation, Execution: Study!!! JAH Love

What is the purpose of d4? Like, what reasons would white be looking for to do it? The only thing I've seen is that it could help prevent your opponent from being able to castle easily.

d4 is closed and positional usually, if you enjoy positonal chess, and are good at it, it's the correct choice.
e4 is open and closed depending on how it goes, if you are good at tactics and attack, it's the prime choice.
Neither is superior to the other though.
wrong. e4 is better.
Wrong again. d4 is better, e4 leads to tactical complications.
c4 is definitely fine too, you can add b2, g2 and probably some others.
