Why everybody is moving fast on slow time controls

So i noticed something that is common on everyone. Mostly lower rated players.

They all move very fast. Almost imidiately. No matter time control. Almost every single opponent.

Lets say time control is 5+5. Is not slow time control, but compared to their speed it is. 20 moves are played and one of the players get checkmated and his time is about the same as he started the game, and on many cases they end up even with more than than they started.

I know at kids OTB tournaments , lets say 60+30 they all finish their games much quicker. Am i playing vs kids here online blitz? Maybe but can't be all.

Maybe is the fact everybody here plays 1 min or 3 min or 5 min blitz games and some 10 min games. You have to wait a lot to find opponent if you want 15+10 rapid game. But its summer i get it. I myself played exclusively 1 and 3 min games only for years and i still do it from time to time.

But this is getting out of hand. In last few months i was playing a lot of unrated blitz vs lower rated players - mostly on phone or using 3D board settings for OTB practice. And they all move quick and its getting really anoying, becouse i happen to lose on time sometime or they force my bullet play and i checkmate them very quickly and basically we are playing 1 min game on time control of 10+5 lets say... Is just stupid..Everybody is full of agression, agressive play, unsound sacs... I was thinking becouse of the big rating difference they are somehow nervous, but i really doubt all of them are like that. One of them after the game said - being 1300 vs 1900 he said i am not scared man, i am not scared.. Hate to say but chess is getting more fast and fast, its good i like it but not that even 10-20 min games have to vanish...

Hey kaynight how are ya. By the way my knight is better than yours ;)

And to add up even when IM Fins on youtube is playing 15 min game vs above 2000 rated opponents they all end up with ~10 min left on their clock resigning..

probably think the first move they see is the best one or at least doesn't drop material, so no point looking at other moves and waste time

It's funny when you watch how a titled player might use time. I watched a lot of IM John Bartholomew's youtube channel, and he will play 5+5 and blitz and be talking about what moves he is considering, teaching while he plays. His clock is running down and he still beats people who have 5 minutes on their clocks when the game ends.

Time management is something that has to be learned. Most people are too impatient.

replace "jedi" with chessplayer and it all makes sense.

of course that would be One old Gm to have said this, and

you can do this with just about any life lesson.  Star Wars is

"Ethic and character" course 101

While a topic like this will inevitably draw responses along the lines of "it's their time, they can use it as they please", there is something to be said for taking your time, even in blitz games. Many games where the losing player had lots of time left on their clock might have had a different outcome, had the loser just taken that extra moment to look before they leapt. I'm a terrible blitz player and am guilty of moving on blind instinct rather than calm calculation. Maybe for others too fast moving is the result of nervousness rather than aggression?

The OP is absolutely right about how quickly lower rated players typically move, even in long time controls. If you want to improve, you can't keep doing what the lower rated players do. If you want a different result, then at the very least, take some time to ask yourself questions about the position to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises. If you want to give it more thought, look for moves that improve your position and ones that stop your opponent from improving theirs.

Guilty! I was cruising around 1225 or so, playing 15/10. Then started playing blitz, which I'm awful at, spent half a year dighing myself outbof a hole there to 925 now, and lo and behold I move way too quick in standard now and havr dropped to 1175....😞 Its really two different games!
