The disconnection issue is due to your internet connection.

You aren't that ignorant, are you? This has been disputed many many times in the forums, you know it and still repeat the same nonsense. Actually I think it is the server's issue and/or the data exchange between Live server and player's computer is extremely high for a simple chess game, which I call bad programming. No problems watching Youtube videos, no disconnections whatsoever, only Live chess games stall, reconnect and diminish clocks, resulting in losses on time.

[later] I am not an IT expert, but I would expect videos require at least 100-times more data traffic than chess game (FEN, move(s), timestamp)

Yes, I know the thing has been trolled to death in the forums.

And all the "evidence" that were presented about the "not my connection issue" has not convinced me, to say the least.

It is very possible that they are trouble with the servers. However, I encountered them very rarely since my internet connection got better, for the same browser (Firefox). Very rarely = maybe disconnecting once, for <5 sec, every 100 games or so.

The people that complain on the forums about disconnection issues from their end seem to suffer from it every 10 games at least, which is far from my experience.

I don't think it is a geographical issue either, as I am currently in the UK for 3 months now without having had any disconnection problem either. I connected once in Norway two years ago too, and had no problems (on a sample of 5-6 games, 10|0 each), same in Roma one year ago.

Again, maybe the servers have some responsability, but it's not the first guess I would have.

A rough guess for video vs. game data traffic, but the problem is different.

For videos, the data is a huge part of the bits you have to send. I don't know how the buffering in youtube for instance works, but I suspect the browser loads a script setting the parameters for it and afterwards only video data is streamed. Rough estimate if the video runs continuously (connection fast enough), ie no buffering occurs : 200x300 pixels, each pixel = 24bits, 3 frames /s, neglect audio -> around 5Mb/s.

For chess, the data is basically nothing. Even supposing you send the moves as a string like "Ne4-f6" it is still peanuts. Let's say for example a very simple system without server where 20 times per second the player to move sends a string containing the move that has been played or an empty string if it was not played yet. It makes 5 octets x 20 strings/s < 1kb/s.

The real problem is handling the connection protocols, and in such a way that none can run a script from his computer that would allow him to manipulate the clock. The only way to do that is to use the server's time as the clock. And obviously this needs that the time data keeps bouncing back between the server and the players. I have no idea what stream of data is used or needed for that.

Dont get too concerned about rateings=it is only a game=enjoySmile

I have never had a drop out. I can not therefore, accept it being an issue with the server.

Plavin79 is on the mark, just enjoy.

ill tell u why...

1. the rating system...mates, i understand it's a whole quantum physics thing, but gimme a break, im not entitled to lose to weaker players? if u say that the system calculates this and that, let the system take in account how many victories i have too! i win 5 matches, i get maybe 15 points, i lose one, im taken 13...but ok, this wouldnt be the toughest cookie for me..

Actaully, I have nothing to add, this is just great.

ilikeflags

i do like cookies.

theoreticalboy

I like cookies too!  I would calculate the odds, but it's probably some quantum physics thing I wouldn't understand.

remember that show quantum leap?  that was a great show.

The OP is right: Live chess here does not meet common standards. I see chess.com as primarily correspondence chess site.

If your theory were correct, everyone would have the problem. Youtube buffers significantly to deal with connection problems, so that is not a valid test of your internet connection. Set up a continual ping, route it to a text file and see how many packets you are losing when one of these disconnects take place.

Same from me.

It was.  Sam Beckett was always much too squeamish about having the ability to sleep with so many different women, though.  Dude pretty much had it made.

I know, it's phot spamming, it's bad.

But I cannot resist.

FIREFOX IS DA BEST - SCREW THE REST!!!

(though I believe it's sometimes a server problem rather than my otherwise very reliable Internet connection)

thank you all for your comments!

u damn right it was like this! i suddenly started to fear the general message :connection interrupted! i was afraid that it will pop out after any move! no ones perfect, but it was too much for me lately that was the point of my whole mumbo jumbo and i dont want to lose time anymore on this site!
