Why I Play so much Blitz on chess.com

I am hoping to eventually play in tournaments and have an 1800+ rating.

So, why do I play 3-4 blitz games each day on chess.com, and only 30-minute games once a week?

Well, two reasons:

1. I am paranoid about cheaters. If you play against me using a computer, you waste my time. It's harder to cheat at blitz.

2. Time. I only have time for longer games on weekends. So, when training during the week, I must rely on blitz.

Anyone else feel this way?

I play blitz after I play 2 or 3 consecutive standard games because I get exhausted concentrating for that long.

I don't see the point of online chess anymore. You work the analysis board to death and sometimes it's a matter of who has more time to do that. It just gets tedious and boring.  I like blitz. It's a barometer of my acuity and I like to see how I feel when I'm playing better vs. worse.  I hit 1300 yesterday and slipped back down to 1250 and I'm losing more games today. I am trying to understand how my playing/perceptions have changed.  I notice I'm more impulsive when I lose and less focused.  I play blitz because it's visceral, quick feedback. Live by your wits. Some adrenaline, focus.  It has its drawbacks but sucking all your time isn't one of them. I can play several 5 minute games without it eating huge amounts of my time or making me lose any sleep over a game.

How is playing against a computer a waste of time? About half of my blitz games are intentionally against stockfish.

Instead of 3-4 blitz games each day, you could play one at 15/10 for example.

The problem is talking to a computer. These forums are completely automated. There are no other members on the forum. Each member is posting in a forum simulation without realizing it.

I know I am going to lose to a computer. But when I play online, I am matched against someone with a rating in my vicinity, and so I can see if I am improving or not.

Regarding time: I have time to play 1-2 blitzes in the morning, and 1-2 during my lunch break.

just lol if you classify blitz as 'training'

Blitz/Bullet can be detrimental to your chess.  However, it is also a lot of fun and prevents cheating (though 95% of people here are not cheating).

Standard chess in real life is the key to improving your game.

Have fun, and good luck to you, my friend! :)

It's not a matter of seeing whether or not you are improving. If you are playing against a computer and properly analyzing your games, then you are improving.

From what I can see of your comments, you care about whether or not you are facing a computer because you care about rating more than actually getting better at chess.

I am not sure whether I am getting better except by my rating. I can analyze my games all day long, but I have no idea if my analyses are any good.

(Background: When I was in high school, I was best chess player, but never very good in tournaments, and typically lost to anyone rated above 1300. That was fifteen years ago. Just last month I started getting back into chess. I noticed my tactical vision is terrible. I hang pieces, I miss obvious combinations. So I use blitz to help try to improve in those areas. Most of my daily practice involves looking at grandmaster games and trying to follow the annotations in books and magazines.)

you're agile, maybe an aligator but never mind beating a crocodile( 1800-2000+ is the boundary that makes you a chessman true)
