Even more common is to miss backwards moves.  Take the following diagram.  It is Black to move.  What should White do if Black plays 1...Be7, threatening the Knight with check?

I am a defensive guy. I can see queen go back.

Yes, but you are not moving the Queen back for defensive purposes.  You are moving it backwards on the second move of a mate in 4, after sacrificing the Rook.

If anyone sees a bishop move from Be6 to Be7 they should get their eyes checked, or switch to a better chess app.

🤔There's a much easier way to get the Bishop mated in this puzzle anyway. 😂

(Thank you for the smile.)

What??

The Bishop on f8 goes to e7!  Not the Bishop on e6!

What moronic clown would advertise some illegal move?

Last time I looked, 1...Be7?? (Legal, but not good) 2.Rh8 Kh8 3.Qh1 Kg8 4.Qh7 Kf8 5.Qh8 is mate via legal moves!

SMH!

I'm  sorry.

When you said "backwards moves", I took you literally and thought you were joking.

I'll delete my comment.

The backwards move is White's Queen move from f3 to h1.  Without seeing this backwards move, you might simply defend the Knight on g5 (or move the knight)

By seeing White's backward move with the Queen, you suddenly see that White has mate in 4!

Ok. I see what you mean now.  And yes,  my first instinct would be to protect the Knight.  That's why we have to look everywhere,  right?  And question why someone moved somewhere... what are they attacking or defending, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me. I appreciate it-- and I learned a good lesson on why we look all around the board.

Peace.

Emmanuel Niemann wrote a book on  moves like this.

When attacking or when given a puzzle where the main goal seems to be to attack/win material/mate you generally search for forward moves and backward/sideways moves are less intuitive.

I don't  feel like its a major problem tho. You just need to do more tactics.

Thank you for this information

I discovered this book is on sale in Google Play Books right now, and, unlike some puzzle books, the chess board and pieces are very clear... perfect resolution.

I downloaded the free sample. Quite interesting.

Thank you again.

(PS I received two back issues of New In Chess magazine. Quite expensive, but there are articles and lessons for all levels. That means for me, an intermediate beginner, these magazines will be used as reference and reread often.)

Peace to everyone.

Stay strong during these difficult times.
