Why is Blitz so harder than Rapid?

Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some ideas or advice here! Right now, my Rapid rating is 1265, but my Blitz rating has dropped down to 824.
I know it’s normal to have a gap, but a 400+ point difference feels brutal! I do fine when I have time to calculate in Rapid, but in Blitz, I feel completely lost once the clock ticks down. Does Blitz rely way more on instinct and opening prep, or is the player pool just much stronger at these lower ELOs?
Any tips on how to improve my Blitz game would be awesome. Thanks!

you said it yourself, time management and pressure are a really big factor when playing in these short time controls

you're not gonna be finding the best moves fast enough, if you just focus on trying to not blunder and play somewhat reasonable moves you're probably fine

Blitz is faster meaning you have less time to think about moves.

I have a few tips:
1. Avoid complicated openings; you want to develop your pieces as quickly as possible.
2. In a complex middlegame, make a few safe “waiting moves.”
3. It's often a good idea to set a trap in the middlegame, because most opponents play too quickly and will fall for it, and even if they don't, you can often gain time to think.

My blitz rating is also about 200-250 points lower. I don't play Blitz a lot.

Theres a massive disparity here, 1,000 elo blitz is ridiculously hard...

It’s the same for me, I am 2100 rapid on a good day, but 1800 blitz seems impossible. Either some people have better instincts, or the blitz pool is stronger. Hard to tell.

I'd say it's because it requires completely different skills. You need to have fast pattern recognition and have a lot of techniques memorized so that you can play them automatically, and you also need to be good at flagging (winning on the clock). I used to have a blitz rating ~200 points lower than my rapid rating, if I were on a tilt (losing a lot in a row), up to 400 points lower. But now it’s 70 points away (2022 blitz, 2092 rapid). I think I've never had my blitz rating higher than my rapid rating. But I'm fine with it.

Very hard to tell

@Gmdonovan81, you're right. I was in the 800-1000 range for more than a YEAR. That's probably because I was playing 5+0 though, cuz when I started playing 3+0 instead, my rating increased by ~300 points. But I still think Rapid 1200 was way easier(I'm rapid 1591 vs blitz 1271).

#15 but it's not just that. You need to find the perfect balance

You could give your queen away in every game and have above 800 rapid.

my friends say that the 3+2 pool is for some reason stronger than the 3+0 pool

I don’t think the difference is huge, but it’s kinda noticeable
