It is a mental sport I guess not many fall into that category though

It is almost in the same category as speed cubing with Rubik’s Cube and World Series Poker.

Why wouldnt it be? Find a definition of both to make it clear for yourself

The answer is “it depends”. It comes down to which entity you align yourself with:

1. The Olympic Committee categorizes chess as a sport; this is your platform. With that said, the Olympics are corrupt, self serving and political. Somebody previously mentioned WADA as an example.

2. Dictionaries define a sport of having a physical or athletic prowess.

3. Popular culture depicts chess players as a bunch of nerds.

4. Certain customs and traditions dictates chess as a source of evil and therefore banned.

5. Certain religions and laws ban chess.

6. History has shown chess as a board game.

7. A chess website is obviously going to be a bias. Imagine doing a poll outside of chess.com? I’m sure the results would differ.

It’s delusional when the internet is the centre piece of your contentment.

Eat your heart out.

Pretty sure at least I red here in the news subforum that playing chess became or will become harder in Afghanistan ( https://worldchess.com/news/all/chess-may-be-banned-in-afghanistan/ ) but chess is probably not the top priority for people there at the moment. So not religious, just one specific interpretation by a group in power.

It isn't a sport

It is a sport

Why is it called a sport though should it be a mental sport???

A board game?

Sports is a game of two or more opponents win the opportunity to become the victor.
That said, fishing and hunting are Not sports.

Tacomeats

Pretty simple, it's a competition where two people try and decide who smarter. It takes mental toughness as chess is war. It's one man's/womens army VS another's army. Key word competition thus its a sport. Just because it's not physically challenging doesn't disqualify chess from being called a sport.

godteirqb

chess is not a sport.

Read Emanuel Lasker, Common Sense in Chess (1927). He makes it clear.

There’s professional tiddlywink players. I’m assuming chess would be well considered a sport if that’s the case.
