Chess is considered nerdy because it's NOT A SPORT!!!
Why is chess considered nerdy

I don't care. I'm alredy called "nerd" because I'm studying Computer Science in order to become a Software Engineer, but I don't care. I had some friends who loved chess and we spent a lot of afternoons in front of a board without caring about other people calling us nerds or not.

Chess isn't nerdy. It is a thinking man's game. That is far from nerdy.
That's not "far from nerdy." That's EXACTLY nerdy.
The problem isn't with misuse of the label. The problem is with people who give a crap about the label. "Nerd" is the label an unthinking society places upon those who are willing to spend time thinking through things they, themselves, aren't willing to think through.
Scientists are nerds, engineers are nerds, investment analysts are nerds, computer programmers are nerds, and yeah, chess players are nerds. It's good to be a nerd.

Oh, even investment analysts are nerds...
Chess is nerdy because society thinks good looking stupid people are better than others. So because society is too set in that tradition to comprehend anything to the contrary, they need to classify everything they can't do very well as negative to function without a collapse or massive overhaul.

I think it is sane to have an interest in the unknown like UFO, hypnosis, the future and soon.
today everything is exact science - exploring something that isn't is refreshing.
I once cared about people calling me a nerd when I was younger than 20
today I just don't care. I do what I love to do.
if I ask people why they call me a nerd for being into e.g. chess. they are fast to say they mean nothing bad with the word nerd. it is just a person with deep interest in something.
So try to confront people when they are not in a group what they mean.
A nerd is preferable to a non-nerd anyways. I wouldn't sweat it. You probably hold more cards than you think, and whoever is calling you names may just feel intimidated. You should trust that you've probably got a lot to offer your peers and they'd be lucky to engage you. Maybe apply some of those smarts to navigating the social realm (which can be equally as complicated)?
Because of all the movies (mostly american) where chess players are nerds.
Dont forget tv which is the main culprit.
