Why is chess so popular? For thousands of years people all over the world have played chess all over the world. It was also very hard, and not many people were interested in watching. The average person is not going to watch a 10-15 minute chess video if they haven't even played the game. Still, they might be interested in a 40 second story about chess that is to long.

So, if you haven't tried chess yet, I would go give it a try. Trust me, its not as boring and plain as it looks like. In some ways, chess can make your brain smarter. Whether you decide to try it here on chess.com, or with your own chews board, give it a try! You never know what you might find out about chess!

I couldn’t agree more! Most people who see this will probably love chess already though.

Modern chess was invented around 1500.

What people played before was a very different game.

Current chess was finalized in 1880, when en passant, which was invented in the 16. century, became part of the official rules.

Even just going back to 1950 and chess was very different. There was no Elo, and there have been all kinds of funny rules like if you touched a piece you had to move it, and if you couldnt move it you had to move the king.

Even if you ignore all that, the earliest sources that reference chess are from the seventh century. So chess is like 1300 years old - very old of course, but not "thousands of years".

It is popular due to simple rules, countless possible positions, no special and/or expensive equipment required, wide range of brain activity a player can use in a game, covid
