My best years of chess is when I would go around with a chess board in my backpack and play with as many other people I could find in my school in my 4th-6th grade school years. I was pretty bad as I never learned any openings, lines, or used tricks like pinning or double checks. I think the best way for me to enjoy chess was an excuse to meet more people at my school and start some friendships that lasted even until today.
Why is chess such a great game?

It's a good game cause it never gets old. Even after playing thousands of games it don't get boring in the same way as say a Console game. It's a great way to block out this hell hole of a world as well. It's also a great way for thinkers to connect with each other.
I'm very glad this game was invented cause I would have went crazy if it hadn't

I really like chess because it requires lots of different cognitive skills. You can learn all the rules and basics really fast. You will always find new tactics, positions and problems to deal with. Finally it's just fun to outmaneuver your friends and checkmate them.

Chess is a great (the greatest) game because you can learn the rules and the fundamentals of play in less than an hour, and then spend the rest of your life learning about it. Other reasons it's great: 1) There's an enormous body of literature about it, both instructive and entertaining, that can keep you occupied for decades, even if you never play a game. 2) With the advent of the Internet, there's always a great video only a click away. 3) Even mediocre tournament players seem like geniuses to those who only play casually, an impression we do nothing to contradict. 4) Young or old, rich or poor, famous or infamous, people meet over the board as equals. Race, nationality, gender, language, religion--nothing matters except the game. And from this grow friendships.
