Please....if u are new by all means jumb in and enjoy the many interesting chess ideas .Don't make comments that reflect on a member who has elected to move on. U have no personal knowledge of them or this site.Let it go and stick w/ the chess.

I thought my comment avoided any accusation.  Yes, I am new here, and yes, I will refrain from any speculation.

One of the main reasons I'm new here is because I don't trust online sites to provide fair and honest players because there is no way for me, as an individual, to know if someone is playing far above their rating by using a chess engine.  I also know there have been some here who have been banished for that tactic.  I was simply looking for candidate moves, not a main line, and I specifically stated that it was not an accusation.  The alternative then as suggested is to shut up and go away, which I will do.

If someone told me to shut up and go away, I would talk a little louder because I hate being interrupted in the middle of a speech.

Also a tip: try to develop an online "I dont care if you use an engine" attittude. It works for me. I have played over 200 online games, no idea if anyone used an engine, and dont care. At all.

I was a member at caissa.com for four years.  I loved it for two, but got progressively more bored with it during the last two.  There was a ton of churn there, so I'm not surprised to hear of it here, also.  People come and go.

I finally followed one group of quitters and left that site, about ten years ago.  If you are here, chess is probably a passion for you.  Some passions burn slowly and can be sustained for life.  Others burn bright and flame out, perhaps to be rekindled later, or perhaps not.  People get busy IRL, too--that takes a toll.

Well, there is more to this site than chess. There is also a sense of community, and interaction which used to be more fun than it is now. I suspect that at least one of these two became disillusioned with the latter.

I might have to agree with you there.  It seems to many people just seem to post randomly on just about every thread whether they have something to contribute to the OP or not.  I'm all for tom foolery and what not but its nice when people make an honest attempt to add value to the topics not just try and be funny or cute, emphasis on try.  What I like most about this site is there is alot of community members who really seem to know what they are talking about with chess in its myriad complexities and it would be ashame to lose valued members from nonsense trollers..  rarely do I have a question that is not thoughtfully answered by thoughtfull folks here and I would hate to see that change..

kco

this website is for chess ?

DrSpudnik

I'd hate to think that the incivility of the trolls who keep getting tossed and coming back to post more rude stuff only to get tossed again had anything to do with their decisions to leave.

It doesn't matter what the website is for; what matters is that people behave properly.

Two frequent contributors, the "Tubester" and "Bronsteinitz" have closed their accounts recently.  Other high-profile, outspoken, and popular members (such as Kenpo) have been banned in the last three months.

Does anyone have any explanation of what is happening and what this bodes for this site?

It doesn't "bode" anything, since there are +6 million members here according to chess.com so without having a PhD in math or statistics I'm still pretty sure a few examples don't indicate anything whatsoever, much less a trend.  Members are usually banned for either cheating or for being really obnoxious (ie racist or sexist for instance).

If the "tubester" is the person I'm thinking of good riddance to bad rubbish.

No worries Pop I'll do my best.

There would be many many reasons to leave a chess site.   The thing that

puzzles me, is why close your account when it can be left dormant ?  More

often than not players just stop playing and cease to login.

Because they are addicted and they have to cut themselves off to escape?

This almost works. It is still possible to read discussions while the account is closed. Guess how I know Smile.

trysts

If they are just taking a break then it is probably best to shut the account down instead of appearing like they're not answering questions from pms, or having their friends wonder if they diedWink

trysts

The worst part about the forums is people changing their names. It takes months to figure out who is who.
