Perhaps he doesn't believe that "the Russian political elite" is the same thing as "Russia".
In a very similar vein, I have a tremendous respect for the United States, but no respect at all for their political elite.

He also has a Russian passport, so he still is a Russian citizen.

What passport has to do with anything?

All of them switched to an American flag almost instantly, Kasparov been living in America for so long, can't go back to Russia , having bad relationship with Russia, talks bad about Russia (or politics at least) and still holding a Russian flag.
Is he not allowed to change it or something or is it some political game or something? What's going on ?
