Why the hell do the Knights (the guys with the swords and lances) have a horse face anyway when everyone else on the board is faceless?
Why knight always looks left?

The modern game was "invented" around the same time Columbus discovered America. The big names in chess were in Spain and Italy. Plenty of Kings and Bishops around too.
Only later did they learn to play the game "downhill."
Did the natives exist before the "discovery"?

Why do we have a "King" in chess, instead of "President" or "Prime Minister", not to mention the historically accurate "Maharaja", "Sultan", "Amir", "Sheik" or "Emperor"?

Because there are more horses' asses in the world, than there are horses?
@HW, they're all around us. What's the plan going forward?

Nope, that topic is about the real knight as a piece, I was talking about all written texts about chess, by looking the diagrams from Capa, Reti and Nimzowitsch to Kasparov, Silman, Seirawan. All knights look left on those diagrams. I can give book names also.

Lighten up. Too many refugees poring into your country?
Put them in with the Sledgehammer crowd. Simple.

Jees!! Questions..Questions!..Does Kasparov hang to the left?..does Nimzo's wife have one bigger than the other and which one?...Why is there no "the" in the title? Beyonce had this dilema..Listen!!

That video was kinda tame, @Stevie.
Beyonce singing the song Radio on the (2006) album. Now that one has energy.
We're both old time rockers, remember when she was with Destiny's Child?
And don't forget about those Knights, or you'll be hijacking this thread.

Get lost Z!!..This thread is hijacking the very foundation of common sense..This song is one of the best i've heard..This girl would teach soul to any hardened Geek.

It's really much simpler.
In the early days of printing diagrams, they used real type. It was far easier to manufacture one design for Knight, Bishop, Rook, and Pawn of each color and just use the same type for each piece. The Knights just happened to be facing left, and it eventually became a tradition. They would look odd if they faced right now.
So it's a convention. Like a light square on the right hand corner - there is really no difference, but it became a convention.
Best answer in the thread. Case closed.
And Beyonce (the early years) still rocks.
