A lot of people knew the rules of chess, were stuck at home, and started looking for something to do. The Queen’s Gambit sparked new interest.

This will all likely die down once people are able to more freely socialize, but hopefully many will stick around.

It was xqc's collab with hikaru which started it all, then queen's gambit came along

I think Covid - 19 pandemic is one of the reasons for its popularity. There are many other reasons too.

This is a really good point. I feel like many people decided to try something new in quarantine.

Because losing a game of chess is better than dying of COVID.

... marginally, at least.

A lot of people are fed up playing tiddlywinks, so now they’ve moved onto chess for a change ! ✌️😎

I discovered chess because my boyfriend introduced me to the angel devil game and I thought it was very interesting,  then I explored chess as a close sister to that game.

Covid-19, most people staying home. Big names in chess community did collaborations with youtubers and twitch streamers that still continue to this day bringing along their viewers.  Online chess tournaments that are easy to view without traveling anywhere. Netflix's The Queen's Gambit exploded in popularity.

You have to think that shorter time controls have helped. Six hour marathons make chess look dull and nerdy to the average person. It’s almost impossible for anyone to watch a classical game, but rapid and blitz games online are fun and you can play along thinking “what would I play?”

When the World Chess Championship comes around and people used to fast-paced exciting action tune in to watch it, a LOT of people are going to be like, what the hell is this?!?!
