According to Britannica:

"Bowling and chess are recognized sports, but they do not compete at the Games."

I'm assuming they aren't at the Olympics because the Olympics are based on physical skill, while chess is a test of intelligence.

From the trusty 'ol internet....

Art competitions were once part of the modern Olympic Games, spanning from 1912 to 1948. These competitions celebrated artistic expression inspired by sports and awarded medals in five categories: architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture1. Notable artists participated, and their works reflected the Olympic spirit. While these competitions are no longer part of the games, they remain an intriguing piece of Olympic history! 🎨🏅

I suppose if literature was in the Olympics, it must be a sport. Maybe one day the physically strenuous sport of chess (sometimes those pieces are heavy) will rise to the level of architecture.

Because its boring and even if you're half decent you still probably have no real clue what's going on. Most events in the Olympics are elementary to understand and the ones that aren't make up for it with action. Now if chessboxing were a bigger thing, that would make the Olympics in no time.

I don't know if chess would be a part of the Olympics but I agree with this guy that chessboxing might be a part of the olympic in future.
