why not chess in the Olympics? they could play a five minute competition. the difference with the olympiad is more general viewers would watch the Olympics who would not watch the olympiad.

Well, poetry was once an Olympic event.

I don't understand some comparisons here.  Go isn't played worldwide, cardgames have an element of chance, other boardgames simply don't have the history combined with the international nature of Western chess.

As perhaps suggested something like shooting and archery is as much about mental concentration as chess is.

Why can't the Olympiad simply be incorporated into the Olympics?  It could open up more funding for chess.

One reason not to make chess an Olympic sport is that chess isn't much of a *sport*, as opposed to a *game*.

Another reason is that every Olympian is subject to random drug testing, and lots of chess players, arguing that no known drug makes you better at chess, resist that.

Before giving lectures about what is and what is not a sport, I would advice you to go do some reserach first.

Chess is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic committe (IOC) and in fact the FIDE has been recognized an international sport federation since 1999.

The IOC is free to consider tiddlywinks a sport, if it wants to. If it did, I would not suddenly consider tiddlywinks a sport myself.

Events are defined by their limitations.

Other skills rightfully excluded that are more physical than Chess would include vocal volume

Even I was thinking the same when I yesterday received the chessbazaar newsletter based on Olympics rio theme. Blitz chess requires some physical skill, especially the 1-minute bullet games.

Yeah, that's true that you don't need to be physically fit to play chess, you just need enough manual dexterity to move the pieces at hit the clock quickly.

In my opinion Chess is a "mind sport" and it should be included in Olympics.

Whether we call chess a sport or not the biggest problem. Is problem is the lack of spectator appeal.  Regular chess players like me I find most GM games incomprehensible without a commentary from someone almost as strong as the players.

With physical sports we are similarly clueless about what is really going on at a high level, but we can still enjoy, as spectators, the obvious skills on display and the strength or power or athleticism of the competitors.

The thing about entire childhoods being sacrificied for a (usually-failed) shot at being in the olympics has always upset me. By that token, though, I wonder how many hours of how many years kids sacrifice who grow up to maybe become chess greats. I'm seriously asking; I have no idea.

It is no sacrifice if you enjoy the training and competing for its own sake, and not only if you turn out to be a winner!   That is why you should do what you love doing, not somethingfor which you have no great liking, but in which you think you think you have the "natural talent" that might enable you to become a champion.

It took Montreal, for example, 30 years to finish paying for its Olympic stadium.  Considering the questionable economic benefits of hosting the Olympics, it might not be a bad idea to host a chess tournament in an Olympic facility once the games are over.

That's actually a good point, and I agree. The Olympics is aimed at the physical level of human skill. Maybe a better solution than trying to get the general public to shift appreciation to the next higher levels--emotional and intellectual--would be to start a new Olympics *style* event, but with a different name, a different set of contests, and a focus on the intellectual (or emotional) level instead of the physical level. Along with chess, there might be a 4-D mind-controlled competitive video game, a theorem proving contest, and who knows what else.
