I agree - why start a blitz/standard game and play as if it were bullet? Seems like a good way to lose a few games ...
Why not use the time??

Nigel Norris, please see my reaction to Peter Pepper's thread, in which I try to explain my views, not defending, but perhaps making clear why players do so.
This currently bugs me a lot as well. Even at 30 minute time controls some play through the first 30 or so moves in 5 minutes and don't really seem to care to understand complex positions. Just thinking through your moves carefully gives you a huge edge over them and their sloppy play.
It seems somewhat disrespectful to the game and opponent to play like that. We'll just have to punish sloppy players by exploiting their mistakes (of course, in some cases your opponent may just be using your time to prepare his own moves because you're in a somewhat predictable sequence of moves).
Although the problem exists in 30 minute games as well, perhaps you could try those. Players who play these seem to be a little more patient on the whole, and it's very rare for either party to use all of that time even if they play seriously, but the time is available if you really need it.

Thank you, gnu6969 and Nigel Norris, I now see this problem exists only in 15 and 30 minutes play, not in bullet and blitz ( sorry, Time4Tea )
In my reaction to Peter Pepper's thread ( did you read that, gnu6969 ? ) I mention a 5/2 minutes play, in which I need 4 minutes, ( well, 80 % of available time ) and that is not unsportsmanlike, so I do not feel disrespectful at all ( to the contrary ! ) Thanks ! Ger.
I lost my mojo and stopped playing for a year or so. Came back last week and immeditaly put 100 points on to my grade. What's changed? I'll tell you, no one seems to use their clock now.
I play down to the last minute and use all of my time [in 15/10 games], but all of my opponents still seem to have 12+ minutes on the clock when they lose. if you're going to play 15/10 chess why play at blitz speed? Makes no sense at all to me.
Makes a nonsense of the grading system as well, I might be 1550 rated but since all of my opponents are handicapped by playing their moves in 1/5 of the time that I use that grading means even less than it used to.
