there are literally only 3 reasons, fun, addiction, or money

edit: I forgot to mention that parents forcing u to play chess to flex to other parents could also be a reason

-Fun

-Rich intellectual activity, with fascinating problematics.

-Mental health and preventing degenerating disease.

You play that for the same reason you play sports. Unless you have an **obvious** enormous  potential, you do this for good health and reaching sensible goals. If you wanna be the "best", quit already. Most of you will never get anywhere near there (especially if you've started at adult age) It is equally dumb as "how long do I have to train basket in order to play in NBA"; "when will I bench press 600 lbs" (if you need to go to the gym only in order to reach that kind of goal, cancel your membership because you're wasting your money probably).

I think there are no objectively good reasons to play chess in most cases. Chess is a distraction from reality similar to how fiction books and video games are. It is a form of escapism.

Some people said it is to satisfy boredom, or they are "addicted" to chess. Those answers do not explain why chess feels interesting and why it keeps bringing people back.

There is no scientifically proven evidence that chess benefits the player in any way. I think the claims that chess somehow makes kids more intelligent is simply made up myths by the older players who want to justify spending hundreds of hours on something which does not produce any tangible benefit to the player. That is, any activity which requires the attention and focus of the mind technically can benefit the person. But this is the same as any hobby or activity

Since it is an activity which requires the player to deal on a board with 64 with pieces on it, it means that at the time of play the player does not usually think about other problems or responsibilities. That means that for some people chess may be a way to distract themselves from various anxieties of life, but for others it is an unhealthy way to avoid dealing with the real world.

Personally I think chess and other board games fulfill the need in some people to have an activity that satisfies the need to solve problems, or "to hunt" or "to gather". The player projects themselves into this abstract substitute of real world problem solving. Video games in my opinion fulfill a very similar need for the player to give an activity to the mind which they often cannot have in real life.

In my case I keep coming back to play chess because I have PTSD and severe persistent anxiety. Chess helps me interrupt my anxiety or panic attacks.
