Why play chess if it just causes contention?

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just wasting my time playing chess because of the contention it brings. Everyone hates losing and it makes them mad even if they don't show it. I have had people swear at me because they lost, in person and on the internet.

Yeah, let's all quit chess and go home. Erik, you can shut down the server now!

I guess that's a question everyone has to answer for themselves.  I do think it's a stretch to say "everyone" "hates" losing or to think that "everyone" is always mad at you if you win.  It's possible to lose a game and be frustrated without having any ill will toward another player.  For myself, of course I get frustrated but then I try to look at what I can learn.   I don't get mad at the opponent for making the right moves, just the few times someone's been a poor sport when winning.

Anyone who swears at you just because they lost has some growing up to do.  That one's their problem I think, not yours.  My experience is there a lot of good sports on this site too.

Ed's an old-timer - been around the block a few times. Idk if he's just depressed or what, lol.

its ok too lose because losing is learning as long as u anaylyze all your games and learned the mistakes that you done and don't do the same mistake again

Chess has been a lifetime journey for me ever since I was 11 and I have enjoyed the journey. I am 37 now and I have become a spiritual man. I don't like making people mad because it goes against my nature. Can we all be peaceful chess players?

" I have had people swear at me because they lost, in person and on the internet." It is funny that you mention this, I am not allowed to say that I effed up, but my opponent is allowed to say eff you....how does that make sense??

I quit chess for over 30 years because I took losing too personally. Now that I am 70 and about to retire, I starred playing again. More important, I am trying to teach my grandson to play. Win or lose, it keeps my brain sharp.
