Some can be based on pawn structure, and you slowly build them. Usually the center is locked and or you have more space on the side of the board where their king is castled (typically a pawn on the 5th rank, e.g. e5 as white. Others you have more pieces in the area and have just one chance to sac and open lines.

Vukovic's book is a classic: "Art of Attack in Chess"
Maybe start with Gormally's "Mating the Castled King"

In any case you don't attack when you want, of course. You attack when the position calls for it (or allows it). Superior space and/or force in the area of the enemy king are the telltale signs.

Welcome to the internet!

the idea , oc, is to dilute the madness- and to at least make it funny... rather than just get us all raging and mindlessly mad.

not that there is oc, much of a "mind" to protect.  but to preserve our small portion of thoughtfulness is the Whole point of chess....
