Why so serious?

It's hard for me to understand why so many people spend so much effort on a game that a telephone can beat you at.  I've been playing for 50 years and couldn't justify one minute of the experience on the board.  The face to face social interaction is the only value I've seen.  Now, "tech chess" has removed that quality.  I was hoping one of you could give me a reasonable explanation as to why we keep investing our most valuable resource, time, into this endeavor.

It's fun. We like it. We do it. It is really that simple.

dillydream

It's even simpler than that - we're addicted.

Skwerly

You have been playing for fifty years and you aren't even 1400?

I am USCF 2231.  I've played 1 online game here and I guess 1400 is all I deserve.

So the aliens don't destroy the Earth.  Duh.

Elubas

Why? Simply put: no other activity, even thing, rewards deep thought and logical, abstract ideas as this game. This game really is logic for the sake of logic, and I love it. It really does make me feel so much better to get really good at a game that has nothing to do with the outside world (although I do think the game helps you reason in general, but that's a pretty secondary thing), that's how rewarding it is.

This existential chess question is only asked to distract us from the board while you're tricking us off the board. Please try something more sophisticated next time.

I have a very sophisticated question- who invented cheese in a can?

BullmeatJohnson

The Nabisco Company invented cheese in a can

My bad.  Carry on.  :)

BullmeatJohnson

Actually, I'm too superficial to take anything seriously.

As a non-setient entity, the Nabisco Company is incapable of inventing anything.  Question still stands.

I'm not doing anything tonight, so let's carry on the investigation of BMJohnson's rating discrepency. So, Bullmeat, why don't you apply for a free titled membership instead of beating unsuspecting 1100s?Laughing

curodd

I cant say for certain, but i tend to get "addicted" to addicting games very easily.  I play sodoku, actually any game on my phone.  Perhaps its just being bored.  But chess seems to be a game where i feel like if im improving that im improving my mental ability.

ps what is the chinese game that some great chinese guy use to make his generals play?(got this off criminal minds) i would love to try

"some great chinese guy."

Love it.

BullmeatJohnson

I'm a newbie here.  Titled membership must be wonderful.  I'm sure my ego could use a boost.  Hell, ego might be the answer to my original post. Perhaps later we could play and you can make a decision as to what I am or am not.  A victory might boost your ego.
