Yes...the comment is stupid, uncalled for, and rude.  And yes, their is also some self-esteem issues going on.  So...be the bigger person and ignore it.

well thank you to everyone who contributed a constructive comment.

I will start by playing 30 minute games only. This will do a few things. It will ensure that I dont sneak in any games at work where i can only pay 1/2 attention. Without setting aside the time to think deeply, how can anyone expect to think deeply, right?

I played 2 15 minute games after this post and won both, though I didn't play terrificly in those either. I know my mistakes as I make them. 30 minute (+) games are probably the answer.

I'll try for a while and post results as I try the experiment.

Last night I tried some unrated games before bed, as I often do.

It was so terrible... not only could I not calculate well, for some reason I repeatedly screwed up opening theory I supposedly know... not just 1 or 2 openings, all sorts of openings I was playing moves I'd never played before.

Some days are definitely weird.

I am wondering this too ... I feel exactly the same as yesterday. but I lost 19 out of 24 games today. i dont feel different. I know im playing faster .. i try to slow down. nothing. still lose. The only thing i can do is force myself to quit ... even though i feel perfectly fine.

The ability to play chess is greatly impacted by your cognitive functioning for the day. If you are off, you will have a bad day....especially with chess. It takes so much to be on point. Getting proper sleep and nutrition plays a big role in how well you play. If you notice you are having an off day, then stop playing and resume when you are feeling better.

sometimes you get into a stubborn downward spiral where you are clearly on an off day, and you try to power through it by playing more and more like you can just will being in the zone when you just fatiguing more and more and next thing you know, you lost 60 points in one day.
its like how bad gamblers try to gamble more to recoup loses and end up deeper in the whole.

Yes I too cant understand!! Yesterday I won easily against 1700 players but today I could not take profit against a 1400 english player. I think he is strong but his ranking had gone down because he was beaten by some serious stuff!!

Usually, I just take a nap and I gain back enough energy to think better.

What is it about chess that makes it so addictive though?

I think it’s like many other things/sports where you are off your game some days. It just happens, there isn’t a conspiracy or cheat bots or anything like that. It’s just the way chess goes.

Same here. My top score was 1850, several times, but suddenly I lose 10 -15 games in a row and get all the way down to 1600 or even 1500 league. which I call outsider league. It depends on several factors, have we eaten and slept well, do we have peace and quiet or is there noise, we are tired and have irregular diet. everything can affect.

Losing a few games makes you emotional, leading to rushed or reckless moves.
