Why the endgame is as boring as putting?
I don't remember which great chess player ( help me ) said : "Play the opening like a book, the middlegame like a magician, the endgame like a machine". I don't think he meant that the endgame is a mechanical phase, but that you have to play precise, clean, inexorable, because there are no memorized patterns to guide you ( apart from those of the elementary endings ) and even an insignificant pawn move can be decisive and condemn you without the possibility of remedy. I think it is the realm of pure, cold logic. And at more advanced levels, it will certainly be even more exciting, because it requires extensive knowledge of specific techniques and strategies. Knowledge + skill, it is in the endgame that this combination is expressed to the fullest.
I also really like the endgame. Perhaps few people appreciate this phase because we play too fast, while to play an endgame well it takes a long time to analyze, calculate, plan long manoeuvres. I almost always play 15'10'', which for me is already very fast, and I often find myself short of time and therefore I play it badly ; but when I get into the endgame with enough time, it excites me.
Unfortunately I don't have time, but I think I'd really like to study the endings.
