Why was touch move invented?

I was just wondering, I don’t have anything against touch move, but it makes a lot less sense and allows for a lot more mistakes of people accidentally touching pieces and stuff than the rule where you have to let go of a piece for that move to count, and you can go and move a different piece. Or the move only counts when you hit the clock. Touch move just seems like it would mean a lot more stupid losses and rating loss that they didn’t deserve by accidentally touching a piece, and I can’t really think of why it would be the rule.

What stops a troll from trying to throw you off by fondling all of your pieces one after another, disarranging them on their squares, picking up one piece after another and pretending to move it, only to draw back at the last moment?

Why encourage trolls? Why legitimize harrassment?

The touch-move rule is where the code of conduct meets the rule-book.

#2 I feel like that would only hurt the player who’s trying to troll, it’d only give away any ideas there were with that move, then if they move a different piece they’ve just wasted some of their own time. I’ve never played an otb tournament, so I might be wrong, but I don’t feel like that would be that annoying, and definitely not “harassment”

I played in OTB tournaments since the late 60s, and in rated OTB tournaments since the early 70s.

I've seen some disgraceful examples of conduct by tournament players. One got himself arrested.

There are rules of conduct for a reason. The reason is that people are jerks.

Yeah, but how could just touching pieces be that bad

You can’t get arrested for adjusting a lot of pieces

No, but you can be forfeited by the Tournament Director.

Is it really that painful to act like a normal person, instead of trying every scumbag trick you can think of to distract or annoy your opponent?

I just think the amount of pointless losses and mistakes touch move has caused greatly outweigh any annoyance from people just touching pieces

just calculate in ur head, there is no need to touch the pieces until you've decided on a move.

When its not my turn to move ,I am studying the board and the last thing I need is my opponent waving a piece under my nose only to replace it and wave a different piece
