Will chess.com still exist 100 years later?

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was…

In 100 years, we will all probably have computer implants in our brains and we'll be able to access Stockfish version 87 automatically. Remember, the first vacuum tube computers the size of a living room were invented only 70 years ago, and your phone is zillions of times more powerful than that. Brain-controlled computers are already becoming a reality. There are some that actually work, just not very well yet.

There will be some people who refuse to have an implant, thinking it some government plot, but mostly playing chess will be trivial.

Earth, in 100 years... I am sorry.

Why would you want a computer implant in your brain? Are you completely mad? happy.png No, Chess.com definitely will not exist.

No, 80 years ago or perhaps more.

We already carry it in our hands and communicate with it wirelessly. Barely a step up from that.

Prolly not.

As a long time Internet user, the same thing always happens.

1st. A website becomes very popular.

2nd. The old guy running the website dies, retires or just gets bored.

3rd. The old guy sells it to a person who flips websites.

4th. Dude who flips website ruins everything to gain a quick buck.

5th. Everyone leaves to a new website.

6th. The website remains, but it is only held on by nostalgia by old time users. Eventually that isn't enough to support it and it closes.

That would be more of a case for content website made by young enthusiast which later is bought out or owner try to monetize, like forums, newssites, articles, comedy and so on. This is a game platform (chess + variant and if there would be money in it, we could probably add all other similar boardgames) + streaming + user made content with forum and blogs. This site was business from the beginning, or at least for a long time, with different memberships.

What can kill this site is better alternatives together with stupid monetization and gamification (looking at you leagues).

Google says the first prototype, that wasn't actually a computer, was designed in 1939. During WWII, something that was more akin to a math machine was used to help break codes. The first commercial computer that actually could be programmed was in 1951.

Instead of screaming "get off my lawn!" you'll be screaming "get off my brain!" Of course there will be some people who won't get an implant, but there will also still be people who believe the world is flat.
