Will computers ever solve chess?

There are other ways to solve chess than just by brute force.

This is why I mentioned the possibility of a "perfect" chess engine. Of course, proving that the engine is perfect has its own challenges, but it may be a more practical way of "solving" chess.

A perfect chess engine is one that always finds the best moves.

From a practical perspective we are getting close to that already. Statisticians have stated that they consider a rating of ~3600 to be perfect. Chess engines are approaching that level.

Just about every expert in the field accepts that chess is a draw. While it's possible everyone is wrong, it's highly unlikely.

Hans Berliner, a top American player in the 20th century, the World Correspondence Champion 1965-168, and a computer scientist, argued that chess is won for White with 1.d4. Furthermore Berliner believed he was on the way to such a proof using computers.

He published a book in 1999 titled "The System" making that case for 1.d4. It's one of the most unusual chess books I've seen.

Yeah, it seems hard to test. For example lets say they continue to improve for years and the draw rate is nearly 100% between them, it's still difficult to know. For example the ridiculous multi-hundred move mates found in EGTBs that would never be found by an engine.

Maybe better to say we would reach a pseudo perfection... i.e. as perfect as that current method (tree searching and evaluation functions) can give us (without using extremely long calculation times).

He probably has changed his views that White should win since 1999 but it would probably not be to his advantage to admit this.

Virtually all strong players know chess is a draw with best play from both sides.

In the event that two moves are equally bad ... they both lead to a loss or a draw, which is the best move?

Neither is better except in practical play.

Virtually all strong players suspect chess is a draw with best play from both sides.

Berliner is 87 and living in Florida. I presume he has slowed down some. I wouldn't presume to know his current views.

Nor does anyone know for certain chess is a draw with best play, though that's the way it's looking.

P vs NP... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P_versus_NP_problem

Best play is ALWAYS a DRAW.  Here is why.  Take any lost,  now back up a move and make all possible moves untill it isn't a lose.  If that dosen't work, back up another move and do it again and again.  If there is a draw, that's the NEW best move.  You can always back up a move or you would be on the first move,  AND we know there are draws on the first move for Black.  There are only 20 moves White can make on the first move.  That's not even many to study, and if you lose just back up one more.

If computers ever become able to solve problems on their own, not just chess, that would be awesome, but it would also be the end of an era. Imagine all the current safe cryptosystems becoming useless. The person/persons who discover the solution in p vs np problem, if there is one, they will have the power to errase world's dept, leak classified info and do some real sciense fiction shit

Jesus Christ! Honours to my real concubine Huong Thi Thuyen Vu.  Honours to my real eunuch Nguyen Binh Thuy.

God says no to computers solving chess.

Avatar of RPaulB

To repeat:  BEST MOVE is ALWAYS a DRAW.   The logic is stated above.   There are only 20 moves White can make.  Half of those will lead to a lose for White if Black makes BEST MOVE.

Avatar of RPaulB

Well , that is another way to get a Draw, ask your GOD for the best move.

That the best outcome for chess is a draw is a best guess.  No one knows for sure.

That's correct. RPaulB's logic is silly. If you think about it for a few minutes, you will see why.

You clearly don't understand the word eunuch:

Eunuch:

A castrated man, traditionally employed as a harem attendant or as a functionary in certain Asian courts.

He only attends my harem, of which your mother is part.

The technology is growing very fast right now? Probably after 5-10 years chess will be solved.

Just like GO is solved. It will happen.

Go solved? Where did you get that idea?
