Most are younger than him now.

Among players rated 2700 and above: there are 33 older than him, and 13 younger.

every draw signifcaintly decreases his rating
every lose decreases trucks of his rating
he can break the 3000 barrier if : if he beats one or two super GM {2900} {or} win lots of IM {2500}

Magnus Carlsen is at 2859

It is doubtful he will ever reach 2900.

Wow, this thread really aged terribly.

It also became a pure troll thread thanks to expert_john11 and warlard69420, but that is another matter.

Next time he plays Hansy and resigns after 4 moves, that's gonna hurt him again.

AussieMatey

I didn't say it wasn't.

I mean, bobby fischer was the closest to the 300 rating, but he went insane soooo

I have no clue why people post drivel that is so easily disproven with just a few seconds’ worth of research.

Looking up facts on the internet before posting on the forums is akin to using a chess engine, which is banned. It is good to learn good ol’ fashion posting without assistance from a silicon-beast, using nothing but your brain, blood, sweat, and tears over many years … that is how you get better at posting.

How about we talk about 2900 first? Even this will take ages if it happens some day and 3000 is not thinkable of in the moment because the competition is too low rated...

10 years later, Magnus didn't even cross 2900 ELO.. Competition at that level is fierce. Fact that he's a 2880+ in itself a towering achievement by a human..

Never, 3000 is way too high, Kasparov was 2851 in 1999 and just beating that is tough enough, a great player like Anand never had a single 2900 performance in his career as far as I know.

Magnus Carlsen could break the 3000 barrier, but it seems very unlikely.

Here is my reasoning:

Magnus Carlsen is a great player, there's no doubt about it. However, just because he is young does not mean he will improve. In almost all sports, there is a set age where most players hit their peak. Chess is not like that.

You can peak at 2000 when you are 15, or you can peak at 400 when you are 40. There truly is no set limit. So, just because Magnus is young does not mean he will improve to be 3000+, although it is possible.

Now, responding to the top comment, which states the following:

devarajusa commented:
Considering Magnus Carlsen is only 21, and already has a Elo rating of 2800+, is it probable that after 5-10 years he will break the 3000 barrier and become the first human player to do so?

Well, that question has been answered. As I am writing this, it is May 17th, 2023, which is 11 years after this comment, and no, Magnus has still not even broken the 2900+ barrier yet.

Finally, Magnus has not participated in the 2023 World Chess Championship, hinting at a break from chess. Will this hurt his ELO? Not exactly, but he may not be as "good" when he returns.

In conclusion, Magnus Carlsen will likely not be the first player to break the 3000+ barrier. However, that does not rule him out. Comment down below to voice your thoughts. If you are maybe 5, 10 years in the future, tell me who is the top chess player in the world.

Thanks!
