Hi all, i have been given one of these http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=itbusiness&type=notebookcomputers&subtype=nseries&model_cd=NP-N130-KA01UK as part of my yearly internet upgrade from 3G. I just want to know if it will be powerful enough to use the wholeof this site including lvechess, video lectures etc, with decent performance ie no slowdown. Any opinions?? cheers!

Here are the specs:

I think you'll be fine, probably the speed of your connection will be the limiting factor.

I've got a 20Mb connection, still experience slow page changes and lag on LiveChess.

it was the processor speed that i have heard is really slow compared to desktops, a mate told me it will be slower than my desktop which is about 8 yrs old! (p4 2.8 g)

Yeah, 1.6g is pretty slow for a single core these days, but where's the huge demand? It's mostly only browsing on this site. I recently built a desktop system from bits I scrounged off "Freecycle", the processor is only 1.67g but it browses fine although it won't play any demanding graphical games.

so long as it will play the vids on here and let me play livechess / tactics trainer / chess mentor/ i will be a very happy bunny :-) its small so i can bring it to work on nights (12 hrs shifts), should be some fun nights ahead !

hehe simon it will be more then enough. Chess.com is great in the sense that it doesn't run massive flash applications which are the real resource hogs when it comes to running a web site. So your computer will be ample. :D Just make sure you have it up to date by installing flash player 11, and other key software. You can download everything you need from here:

Hello!

Well, I've always said that a netbook is only good to buy ... for free. Otherwise, the price difference to a normal laptop is too small.

As for what you'll get: it will be OK for browsing. But I don't think it will run the videos very well (if at all).

Costelus it does run videos. :D hehe my mates at the uni use the poor excuse for a computer to only watch youtube vids. :D

Youtube videos are very different from chess.com in terms of processor usage.

i had a note book and it was useless for everything bar browsing so GL!!!!

I have a netbook with the same processor and half the memory that runs most of Chess.com just fine. I haven't played live chess yet so I can't speak to that; the videos I've had mixed success with, but that may also have to do with the fact that my netbook runs Linux (the one you linked runs XP). Google Chrome, which is only available for Windows at the moment, might also help you make the most of its limited resources and get the most out of Chess.com, because Chrome has a highly optimized JavaScript engine.

Regardless, they're fun little machines and I'm sure you'll find plenty of enjoyment with it. :)
