Thanks for the new posts and good luck with everyone's plans to move forward with improving their FIDE ratings.
Will you become a CM ? ( or a NM, or a IM etc )

I am almost a CM, so I think I will be a CM.
No doubt about that. Give yourself a year. The real question is how long till IM or GM? I would be suprised if it took longer than 3 for IM, even more if you did not reach GM in 8 max, probably much sooner.

IM or GM in 3-8 years? No...
I think you can! I know someone who started at age 16 and went from 1000 to 2450 in 6 years, by working hard - about equally hard as you!
2450 is about IM, and I think you are already at 2000 so at that rate about 3 years.
Not sure about GM, we will cross that bridge when we get to it, but I believe in you! I know you and you are at least as capable as the person who started at 16, and you seem to learn at least as fast too!
The younger you are, the faster you learn. Magnus did it at 13, Fischer at 15! You can do it!

"We had a thread on the go here about becoming a GM in 30 days"
One usually becomes a GM in 24 hours. At least that's what a computer engine once told me. 30 days is longer than usual.

I'm 1920 USCF. Just hoping to hit expert this year. Keeping it short-term and realistic.
I was within reach of Expert three years ago (1982). I'll be happy to finish 2016 back over 1900.

I was a GM, and lost to a 10 year old in the park. They took away my title.
Then I got my ass kicked by a baby genius.

By USCF standards, I am a current Candidate Master. My current USCF rating is roughly 2100, I currently hold a USCF Candidate Master title, and I have a rating floor of 2000 (meaning that my rating can never go below 2000 no matter what happens). I guess you can say that I am a "Life 'Candidate Master'/Expert."
I tend on going for an NM title (which I am sure is not too diffcult to achieve). In my opinion, the main difference between candidate masters/experts and national masters (and beyond) are playing hundreds and hundreds of games.

You're 27 now: you will become a NM, you will never become a IM or GM.
Sorry for spoiling it for you, guess I'm clairevoyant.

Actually I qualify to become a CM according to UK standards as my FIDE rating was above 2200 at some point in time.
I may have to pay...but I will see what it costs and perhaps think about it. I don't play any tournaments anymore and have no aspiration to aim for FM which would be the next realistic level, but gaining a 100 FIDE points is not easy at all, especially in your late 40's....too many better things to do in life.

a) Nothing was said about becoming an IM or a GM, however
b) Explain why someone can't become an IM around age 30? It happens quite often.

Even above 30, one can become IM or GM if he is around 1500 rating (not full beginner) and chess becomes his full time hobby - no wife or kids and with strong coach.
Right now as we speak there is a tournament in Texas with 10 players from 2000 to 2560 with couple FM IM and 3 GM's. And this tour is for IM and GM norms.... You have to score 6.5 out of 9 to get the GM norm.

I dont think it happens quite often that someone at age 27 rated 2100 becomes IM around age 30 . Americans always have a tougher time earning fide titles than Europeans simply because Americans have fewer opportunities to play fide rated chess .

There is a rating floor to prevent people from falling below a certain rating???

How many IM/GM norms have you made ?
I am 42. I started playing again in 2011 after a 19 year absence. In that time I have gained 350 Elo and am currently 1851 USCF. So I need another 350 points.
