The opportunity you speak of is for the IMs ... but the FMs and the non titled players playing ( bottom 3 ? ) have no practical chance of scoring 6.5/9 when their opponents include 3 GMs and 2 IMs . Do you have a link for this Texas tourney you refer to ?
Will you become a CM ? ( or a NM, or a IM etc )

Even above 30, one can become IM or GM if he is around 1500 rating (not full beginner) and chess becomes his full time hobby - no wife or kids and with strong coach.
Right now as we speak there is a tournament in Texas with 10 players from 2000 to 2560 with couple FM IM and 3 GM's. And this tour is for IM and GM norms.... You have to score 6.5 out of 9 to get the GM norm.
I hoping to see two friends scoring norms there. FM Alex Betaneli is playing in the IM event and IM-elect Erik Santarius is playing in the GM norm event. I will be rooting for both!

Hasn't started yet, but will be at http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2016-utrgv-gm

I have played in norm events before , in closed round robins and as one of the " marked players " I can tell you it wasnt much fun for me but they paid me to play so I couldnt say no .

@Chris site will be full with people rooting for John me also. Lets hope they both succeed. @Rob you dont know anything about us but i have probably more friends than you here. And you have more haters thats for sure.
Some interesting new posts seen here, to be sure. --- One item that should be mentioned at this point is that NM Reb posts a lot of very informative items at this site plus he also has a title. As he does have a title he would therefore know a lot in regards to this subject, certainly much more than most of us.
I see that there is a funny thread on the go here now about becoming a GM at age 92, well I'm not sure if that is possible or not lol.

By USCF standards, I am a current Candidate Master. My current USCF rating is roughly 2100, I currently hold a USCF Candidate Master title, and I have a rating floor of 2000 (meaning that my rating can never go below 2000 no matter what happens). I guess you can say that I am a "Life 'Candidate Master'/Expert."
I tend on going for an NM title (which I am sure is not too diffcult to achieve). In my opinion, the main difference between candidate masters/experts and national masters (and beyond) are playing hundreds and hundreds of games.
There is a rating floor to prevent people from falling below a certain rating???
Yes, Jenium. If you win first place and win enough money in a section for a tournament (in my case, $1400 in the U2000 section in the Atlantic Open over 10 years ago as a teenager), you get a rating floor of whatever section you played in (in my case, 2000).

Discussions like these give the impression that people play board games only to get a title as if no other goals related to self-development, improvement of related skills etc. existed. Do you play other board games, card games, learn a foreign language or acquire some new skills at Coursera or in similar online courses etc. etc. just to become a Big Name?
No.
I enjoy chess. I play to get better, to have fun. A title gives me something to aim for, helps me organize my study and goals.
Glad we have that settled.
--- Well hey you don't have to worry, after all by being a Doctor you do have a title of your own lol.
In next five years if you are still alive... And Don't wink at me. I don't like you. And i like girls. Its way more easy than some big strong Tournament. IM who is playing in that tour said this is great opportunity to score GM norm. And you dont have to experience yourself something to know. For example i dont need to shoot you to know that would not be good but i would feel good..
