Thanks for the post Diakonia. Yes for most of us Chess is played for fun however a few folks feel that they are on their way to greatness.

I wanna become an NM! I don't like how they have these fake titles for girls and I want to get a real title.

After I become an NM I will try to aim higher

Well for some, the game is more than just fun, its a career.  A hundred years ago when i was younger i went through what many do when it comes to anything competitive...I thought winning was everything.  I thought my rating was the most importnat thing in the world.  I thought i was what my rating was.  I considered winning success, and losing failure.  I actually had the mind set that if i was rated higher than you i had no business losing to you.

I was not pleasant to be around involving anything competitive.  It got to the point where friends wouldnt even travel to tournamengts with me.

FIDE needs to change the requirement, now it is 2200 elo to become CM; and USFC it is 2000- 2199 to become expert. Any player who 2000 FIDE is an expert. And to become FIDE master it is only hundred points more [2300 elo], it doesn't seem practical at all. The new requirement should be 2000-2199 elo to become CM and to be a FIDE master 2200 elo and up , this seem more reasonable.

Agreed

Yep, me too.

I hope I can become NM. I'll try, but I'm nowhere close to achieving that dream yet.

I learned chess when I was really little, like 8, but I seriously played (like practiced hard) for 2-3 years

I need 200 more points for master!

MSC157

Why not 2000 CM, 2200 NM, 23 FM, 24 IM and 25 GM?

Btw it would be very very nice if these folks that are so very busy moving up on the title ladder would come back here to these forms and keep us advised of their progress ( could possibly be a rather short list ? ).

They have the same problem in the field of Literature as we have in Chess. I mean how many people will ever get to win the Nobel Prize for Literature ??? Or if we want to talk Sports how many people will ever get a medal at the Olympics ? ( any medal, never mind a Gold medal   lol ).

CM should be easy enough for me, as I am 2100 (more than enough for a CM). Just haven't gotten the norms yet.

100 points is reasonable. NM is reasonable. FM should be a goal; IM most likely not.

I personally do not believe a kid is qualified to explain "using his acquired wisdom" that achieving 2000 or above is unattainable to most people who are not already at a particular level after a certain age.

No matter how old you get, there is no goal or dream that is impossible.

That is my version of a famous CS Lewis quote, as I didn't bother to memorize the exact wording.

Seriously robert?

I expect you should be IM.

Maybe GM one day.

I think I can, and if I can, you most certainly can!

thegreat_patzer

if you don't have a great love of the game- then there is NO point to toalk about titles....

BronsteinPawn

I don't really love chess. I don't have love to the game. It's almost the same when i didn't knew much about chess. And i think many high rated players played chess casually with little work and they quit the game with like 1800-2000 elo, then at some point they return and make a master, not because they love the game, but just that they can do it and like competition. Many players for example top GM Grushuk plays other games lke poker very serious.

The thing about chess that i love is actually related to players - competition and beating them in bullet : D I like to improve also. A lot of players love combinations, sacrifices but i don't find them particulary interesting, or positional play.
