Win more with Black?

I saw a 3 year old post that nobody replied to, so I though I would start my own.

I highly doubt anybody at expert level has this issue, but any class players out there like me play better with black?

My win % (including real life) is only moderately higher as black than white (but still higher), but I draw a lot more instead of losing when I don't win as black.

The weird thing is my opening repertoire is much more varied with white. I'm comfortable with The English, Ruy Lopez, King's Gambit, Queen's Gambit, Four Knights, King's Indian Attack, and Reti (which I transpose immediately into RL, or English unless they play d5, in which case I go into KIA). (FYI - I'm not losing because of KG blunders - I rarely get to play it anymore, as nobody responds to e4 with e5 since I was in scholastics).

Black? I play only two openings: King's Indian if they open Queen's Pawn (or English) and Sicilian if they open King's pawn.

Anyone else out there like me? Or know if it's a somewhat prevalent thing at lower levels?

People respond to e4 with e5 all the time.

Here, sometimes (though in my experience less than 1/4). OTB? Almost never. If I play e4 OTB, I am guaranteed to either play against the Sicilian or Caro-Kann - the lattter is especially popular where I live now.

Maybe it's because you're comfortable with a lot of White lines that you don't do as well with White, because you don't commit to a specific repertoire, and so don't learn any one opening especially well. As Black, however, you get to know your openings very well because you play them consistently.

I had the same thing recently. I like the Slav against 1. d4 and the Caro-Kann against 1. e4, but as White liked some lines after 1. e4, 1. d4 and 1. c4. I didn't commit to a White opening. Actually, when facing a strong player I was more comfortable when I had Black!

As a result, I've decided to narrow my White repertoire and only try something else if there's a good reason to (e.g., my opponent is rated quite a bit lower than me).

That is a possibility. Back in my scholastic years, I always opened e4. If I got the e5 resposne I always hoped I would, I would play either King's Gambit (if the were within 100 points of my rating or lower), or Ruy Lopez (if they were significantly stronger than me). I got decent playing against the Sicilian.

After about 10 years off from serious play, I picked up again when I moved back to a major city (hard to play chess in the middle of nowhere - I couldn't even get DSL to play online at one point). But probably a combination of no longer being a scholastic player, it being 10 years later (with new trends being established by that piont), and different towns have their own trends, I played my first game against the Caro-Kann against a 12 year old boy who made me look like a fool. I got better against it as I got used to seeing it, but I soon learned I hated seeing it. I taught myself the English specifically to avoid the Caro-Kann, but discovered I loved its play style and just kept using it. Of course, the people in my club soon started adjusting, so I then added Reti so I could transpose into numerous openings. I actually just started playing the Ruy Lopez for the first time in over a decade - and I have noticed I have quite a bit of rust on it, but I prefer it over KIA (I tend to prefer traditional openings over hyper-modern when playing as white).
