Winning games with less material than your opponent.

As any half decent player knows winning a game is more to do with having your pieces well placed than simply having more material than your opponent.

This got me thinking, what percentage of 'professional' games do you think are won by the person having the most material ?

My guess is it's around 50/50...let's face it in 'high level' chess, players who can see a forced win will sacrifice material for a win and in doing so a considerable number of games are presumably won by the player having the less material.

What do you think ?

if you speak in terms of saacrificial combos than the lesser materials definitely are more.

But often in professional game they wont accept the sacrifice, but rather resign, because they spot the win. Therefore the winner has more material.

I'd think a lot more commonly someone resigns down in material, although the opposite will happen with passed pawns for example.
