Winning With Just A King?

Sort:
FrostedSheep

Ok, this is my first time posting. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section or whatever, But I thought that a game is a draw if the player that can checkmate, runs out of time, and the other has just a king, then it's a draw. So if the player with a king and a queen runs out of time and the player with just a king does not. Then it's a draw? But I tested it on pass and play and the player with a king won? just with a king? Can someone explain why this is? I also checked lichess same thing. I'm so confused honestly

baddogno

Any pawns left?  That's the most logical explanation....

FrostedSheep

No None

baddogno

Then I'm as confused as you are.  Anyone else?

Hi FrostedSheep, this situation is usually a draw due to "timeout vs insufficient material", meaning that the opponent would win on time but they don't have enough material on the board to achieve checkmate. I've alerted our team so that we can look into this for Pass and Play on the app.

BrickSacrifice
Only possible if opponent resigns. if the opponent's time runs out, will it be a draw?
FrostedSheep

Neither opponent resigned, I posted the PGN  if you want to look for both games. The side with just a king won. I did this on pass and play, against a chess.com bot, and lichess bot. I have no idea why as I know about the automatic draw with no time vs no material.
