Good game

Good Luck have fun

Avatar of mpetten

I say good luck not because I think luck is a factor but because I was always taught in any game/sport/competition it is good sportsman like behavior. That being said, I think I may take an approach similar to what Artfizz has been posting here so I never have to worry about saying good luck to the wrong person Tongue out

It's a way of breaking the ice in the game, who knows you could be playing that person for a couple of months, (sounds like getting ingaged) and it don't do any harm!

Just recently I played a game, where my knight was under the dead pin. I was sure that I will eventually lose, my position was getting worse and worse, but suddenly my opponent sacrificed an exchange. When I saw that as a result of it in  a few moves I lose a queen for a rook, I wanted to resign, but just decided to make a few more moves. So, on the next move I see that though my queen is already pinned and "dying", I have a perpetual check!  I, actually, considered myself lucky.

And here's a few more ...

I hope you win.

I hope it works out.

I’m rooting for you.

Go forth and conquer.

You can do it.

You could take the Han Solo approach, and follow your "Good Luck" with a shrug, and "You're gonna need it."

Italian-speaking performers say "En boca al lupo" ("In the mouth of the wolf" -- the required response is "Crepi il lupo!" which means "Death to the wolf!").

Knock 'em dead.

Smooth sailing.

i'll say good luck if my opponent says it to me (mostly to just be kind). i usually don't chat unless my opponents starts it, and even then i'll usually respond just to be kind.

now chatting about the specific game, moves, combinations, strategies, etc. that's completely different. if my opponent is willing to discuss bettering my chess game (and theirs as well in the process), i'm all for it.

I say good luck and I mean it. Diligence is the mother of Good Luck, but randomness also plays a role. I studied the Moscow yesterday. Will my opponent today play it?

At a recent school tournament we shook hands with our opponent before the game, and after the game. I see what you mean by 'no luck in chess.'

Or mockery. Somebody strong player write it to me, then winning move for move.

After game, see his moves only in first computer line.

If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting that if someone is going to cheat by using a chess engine, they should not be hypocritical as well - by saying "Good Luck!" Perhaps they should say instead: "Good LuckYou're gonna need it."

"I'd actually rather people didn't say good luck - I find it slightly annoying. Since chess has nothing to do with 'luck' (random chance), it's almost as if my opponent is suggesting that I'd need some extraneous help to win the game. That might well be true, but still, there's no need to point it out." .. Gabrial

I couldn't agree more it irritates me a lot the GL brigade.  Why are they wishing me luck are they wishing they make a blunder?  Seems just wrong.  Do they suggest I need luck to beat them?

Either way I think it is annoying.

Avatar of eddiewsox

I don't wish people good luck, in fact I don;t say anything unless they do. When people wish me good luck I just take it to mean that I don't blunder.

Enjoy!

& then I got the bullet in the head, what does that have to do with CHESS?

i always thought that wishing good luck was showing you had manners/sportsmanship.  reading through the other posts i understand why some players dont say it now, I think i will go for 'have a good game' or similar. Thanks for the advice.

Avatar of animalcontrol

i do start off many games with a "hello & good luck".

it is a courtesy and promotes good sportsmanship(i hope).

It can also be viewed as a sarcastic remark to a lesser player from a cocky one. The problem is the nonvisual interface does not allow someone to hear your true intent.

Avatar of Sconsc

I find good luck insulting especially from a lower rated.

Good luck from higher rated people makes them sound condescending.

Good luck in a blitz game sounds to me like, "if you win I hope it's because I make a mouse slip".

Good game is also annoying after games where at move 15 i win a piece then another at 24 and my opponent keeps playing on even if he is 400points lower.
